Loosely inspired by the Sazerac, the Ghost Dance feels like a Old Fashioned with a smoky rinse. If you’re one of those people who like to have a smoke with a drink (as well a good whiskey cocktail) then this is the drink for you. It has the tingling of smoke and the taste of a strong cocktail all in one sip. But don’t let the smoke in this drink out you off—this isn’t a smoking cocktail for sorority girls—the smokiness isn’t in the glass, it offers an aroma rather than a taste.  And it is awesome.


Ghost Dance


2 oz Calvados (French apple brandy from Normandy)

0.5 oz gomme syrup (or gum syrup for you non-Francophiles)

0.25 oz furnet-branca

Procedure—Note: You probably don’t want to make this at home, but if you’re feeling adventurous…

1.) Burn bison grass.

2.) Place glass over burning bison grass.

3.) While keeping the glass covered, pour the ingredients over ice and mix until chilled.

4.) Pour into steamed glass.
