Well hey, y’all! It’s our first official weekend guide of 2021 // NEW YEAR, NEW STUFF TO DO! This has admittedly been a bonkers week (on top of it still being a pandemic), so it’s 110% understandable if you just want to stay glued to home the next couple of days, but in addition to virtual programming, we’ll also cover a couple of IRL options below. FIRST, though, here’s some stuff you might’ve missed from BYT the past few weeks while you were (hopefully) enjoying a relaxing holiday vacation:
- First, are you a small business or maker with some p. big ideas? Apply to Foxtrot’s Up and Comers program for a chance to win cash, exposure, real estate on their shelves and more! Deadline is this Sunday the 10th.
- Next, new year and (potentially) new you! Here are tips for Dry January, as well as Veganuary.
- Bored at home? Try a safe staycation!
- ICYMI, here are our definitive 20 best vegetarian dishes of 2020, as well as Phil Runco’s 2020: Beer In Review.
- And here’s what we thought of Wonder Woman 1984 and Promising Young Woman. (Spoiler: we weren’t HUGE fans of either.)
Friday, January 8th
- For starters, like I said, this has been a bananas week. (V. STRESS.) Unwind your mind with some free online meditation with Smithsonian’s Asian Art Museum at noon ET.
- Love you some antiques? (WHO DOESN’T?!) The Washington Winter Show is in full swing (virtually) this weekend, and most of the programming (because, again, virtual) is free w/ registration.
- Later, don’t miss A Bowie Celebration tonight; tickets are $25, show starts at 9pm ET, and the evening is set to include appearances from Anna Calvi, Duran Duran, Trent Reznor, Macy Gray and more.
- You can also catch Baltimore’s Moon Tide Gallery live streaming from Songbyrd at 9pm ET; tickets are $10 a pop.
- More into comedy? Catch Greg Proops’ virtual set via Nowhere Comedy Club at 8pm ET; tickets start at $10.
- (Sam Morril is also going live with new material via Nowhere Comedy Club at 9pm ET for $10+.)
- But maybe you’ve found yourself in a relationship rut with all this being-together-at-home-24/7, in which case tune into Brooklyn Brainery’s $25 virtual course all about how to create fine dining at home for date night.
- Or just get comfortable on ye olde couch, ’cause Dickinson S2 comes to Apple TV+ today!
Saturday, January 9th
- IT’S MY BIRTHDAY, NERDS! As such, I will reveal my top pick, which is the Arsenal vs. Newcastle game that’s being screened at 12:30pm on the heated patio at Lucky Bar; seating is obviously limited because, again, pandemic, but STILL P. GOOD.
- Tunes-wise, Byrdland Records is hosting another round of The Saturday Spins ft. vinyl DJs ‘n record shopping from noon to 2pm.
- Or if you’d rather stay home, make sure to catch a new round of donation-based Safe in Sound ft. performances from Girlpool, Chloe Moriondo and Julie Byrne at 7:30pm ET.
- You can ALSO scope Phantom Planet streaming via Veeps at 9pm ET for $12…
- …or catch a PVRIS live stream starting at 8pm ET; one-time tickets are $15, but there are other monthly and yearly packages available that might make things more economical.
- Into witchier vibes? Just hit up Catland’s $20 virtual New Year New You: Spiritual Hygiene and Self Care for 2021 class at 7pm ET!
- (Or tune into the S2 premiere of A Discovery of Witches on Sundance Now/AMC Plus.)
Sunday, January 10th
- Looking to warm up? Cultivate the City is hosting another one of its epic hot sauce blending classes at 1pm ET! Tickets are $30.
- Up for a 19-mile skate? Join Washington Area Roadskaters for a mega-sesh from 11am to 3pm!
- Also be sure to swing by 3 Stars Brewing from 3pm to 6pm for All Takesies No Leavesies Quarantine Hobby Exchange; your $10 ticket gets you a hot cocktail and a chance to swap everything from puzzles to comics to craft supplies.
- Moving into tunes territory, The Jayhawks are doing a big ol’ covers show starting at 4pm ET. Tickets to that’ll run you $20+.
- Or if the occult is more your jam, tune into Catland’s $20 virtual course The Witch’s Cycle of Manifestation at 7pm ET.
