What a week amirite?! Whether you want to take the weekend ahead to fully decompress or get fully lit (do people still say lit?), there’s lots on the books in both the realms of virtual and IRL programming. We’re talking virtual county fair vibes, IRL outdoor movie vibes, virtual naked vibes, IRL tie-dye class vibes…the list goes on. And we will talk about all the details in just a minute.
But first, here’s what you might’ve missed on BYT this week:
- Firstly, you can now grab augmented reality cocktails (and mocktails) to-go from ARTECHOUSE DC.
- Thamee just launched WOW!, a womxn-operated, BIPOC-focused wine shop, and they’re running a cool promotion for National Black Owned Business Month with Flights and Foods.
- SUMMER RULES continued, and we got top tips for surviving the dog days via the very funny Sara Schaefer (whose memoir just came out), singer-songwriters Seint Monet and Tedy, Tamako Miyazaki of The Washington Ballet and Will Sullivan of Awesome Foundation.
- Our resident vegetarian foodie Priya Konings had a field day eating tons of delicious Malaysian dishes at Makan.
- We had a pandemic check-in with The Phillips Collection, where they’ve done a great job of transitioning to virtual programming.
- I spoke to singer-songwriter Janet Devlin about growing up in Northern Ireland and writing a very honest account of her struggles with addiction and self-harm.
- Meanwhile, the Hirshhorn is slated to reopen its sculpture garden this Monday, August 17th.
- Here’s your weekly guide to being a better ally, including questions to ask yourself while traveling, and how to decolonize your bookshelf. Also, we’ve got five new spots to consider donating if you can.
- I cut my own hair and it was (mostly) fine! (I also got a VPN, semi-specifically to watch international TV! Also mostly fine!)
- And finally, here’s everything we’re into this week ft. movies about murderous, musical mermaids, Cheetos Mac ‘n Cheese and more.
Friday August 14th
- For starters, obviously hit up Strand Bookstore’s virtual presentation of Joey Skladany with Chris Kirkpatrick (yes, that one) as they talk Basic Bitchen, which features 100+ recipes to feed your inner basic bitch. Starts at 7pm ET.
- And while we’re on the subject of food, Busboys & Poets will host Linda Sarsour tonight at 6pm ET for its weekly Zoom dinner series.
- Tunes-wise, probably definitely scope Best Coast’s Crazy For You 10 Year Birthday Party via Seated, yeah? Tickets are $10.
- Meanwhile, Philadelphia Folk Fest gets in full gear today with performances from Adia Victoria, The Milk Carton Kids and more. You can tune in starting at 10am ET (full schedule here), and tickets start at $25.
- For dance party vibes, most definitely stream Papi Juice via elseworldtv on Twitch starting at 7pm ET.
- Or if 7pm is past your bedtime, scope Icona Pop’s live DJ set via Sessions starting at 2pm ET.
- In terms of cinematic feels, Songbyrd is doing DINNER AND A MOVIE ft. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. (Just FYI, seating is super limited, and there’s a $25 minimum per table.)
- Plus The Bullpen will host a $20 outdoor screening of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at 8pm ET.
- More into drive-in movies? Savage Mill will host a screening of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at 8:30pm; $10 per car.
- Or if you just wanna LEARN, make sure to hit up Hirshhorn x ARTLAB’s Respect Her Crank! Frontwomen of Go-Go panel discussion; starts at 6pm ET via Zoom.
Saturday August 15th
- FIRST of all,  start your day by waking up Louis DeJoy; a group plans to meet at Kalorama Park in Adams Morgan (where DeJoy lives) at 8am sharp to make a lot of noise to deliver democracy and protect the USPS.
- THEN, the Arlington County Fair is going virtual this year; today’s lineup features pie eating contests, oven-baked corn dog tutorials, a goat yoga fashion show and more, and you can scope it all on Facebook Live.
- Wanna get more time outside? Rhizome DC is hosting a $15-$25 outdoor Indigo & Shibori 101(read: Japanese tie-dye) class at 4pm ET in the backyard. (Obviously wear a mask and maintain social distance at all times.)
- Moving into tunes town, Philadelphia Folk Fest continues virtually today; catch appearances from Trixie Mattel, Los Lobos, Ben Gibbard and more. Action starts at 10am ET, tickets start at $25.
- You can also tap into some mega nineties dance party vibes via Peach Pit’s live Twitch stream from DC9, or if you’re in the mood to attend IRL, grab a roof deck reservation here. Starts at 9pm ET.
- Or if you’re trying to attend a virtual queer naked dance party, there’s allegedly an $11 one from Joie De Vivre that starts at 8:30pm ET; yes there are loads of consent rules, so be respectful/cautious/all of the things.
- If you’re in the mood to watch a movie, scope any number of Suns Cinema’s virtual screening selections; they’ve got everything from queer classics to something as recent as Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets (which we loved).
- More into binge watch vibes? Rita is back for its fifth season on Netflix today; here’s why it’s p. much been my favorite Danish show since 2015.
Sunday August 16th
- Start off with some outdoor shopping vibes, y’all; Alexandria is hosting its 11th annual Sidewalk Sale come hell or high water, and will showcase 60+ vendors.
- You can also keep the outdoor times going at Victura Park, a family-friendly outdoor pop-up and wine garden located in the River Pavilion at the REACH.

- Meanwhile, the Joie De Vivre virtual naked times continue with a virtual naked poetry reading hosted by Maryella Marie; starts at 1pm ET, tickets are $20.
- More into learning about ye olde occult?Join Catland for a virtual deep dive into the four (maybe five?) elements and what they mean in magik. Class starts at 7pm ET, tickets are $10.
- Or if you’re feeling in the mood for an outdoor movie and couldn’t get enough Bullpen vibes on Friday, catch an outdoor screening of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire tonight at 8pm ET; tickets are $20 again, unless you bought the $35 pass that gets you into both Friday’s screening and tonight’s.
Once again, we hope you stay safe, mobilized and vigilant (AND HYDRATED) out there this weekend. In the meantime, did we miss something? Drop us a line at [email protected]
