BYT has always had a very satisfying, loving relationship with Laura Burhenn. From fashion shoots (here and here) to special “turn me on” DC centric columns to all sorts of behind-the-scenes access while she was with Georgie James, Laura is probably one of our oldest and dearest (musical) friends. The fact that she lives in Omaha now means nothing to us (aside from the missing part, of course) and we had a great time following her latest endeavor The Mynabirds do so well. (check out the latest video for “What we gained in the fire” here)
Tomorrow, on Tuesday, December 7th, the Mynabirds will release a limited edition 7″ on Saddle Creek that features “All I Want is Truth (for Christmas)”, an original (anti-) Christmas song, and a cover of the Zombies’ “This Will Be Our Year” on the B-side, and you get to hear them here first, wrapped with a bow just in time for holidays, alongside some great photos from the recording of the tunes at Inner Ear studios (all photos: Elmer Sharp):
Kicking the EP off is what appears to be a typical Christmas song, all wurlitzer swirls and sleigh bells, which then takes on a more serious turn as Burhenn sings (with that throaty, sultry signature voice of hers) about global warming, messy politics, endless wars, and American consumerism, and brushes it all away to remind us of the snow-white, heart melting core of the holidays: love
followed by “This Will Be Our Year” which is the perfect song to close out a year and hopefully look towards 2011. The slide of J. Tom Hnatow’s pedal steel colors the Mynabirds’ version of this Zombies’ classic as a sweet, country-tinged take on the Zombies’ pop classic original.
The record will go on sale tomorrow (the 1st 200 The first 200 copies from Saddle Creek’s online store will be offered on white vinyl. A black vinyl version of the 7″ will be available at retail outlets, and all records will include a free digital download. The songs will also be available at all digital outlets.
