Profs and Pints presidents: “The Great American Road Trip,” with Allen Pietrobon, adjunct professor of modern American history at American University and visiting professor at Trinity Washington University.

Perhaps no genre of book is so typically American than the travel narrative. From the Underground Railroad to the Settlement of the West to the modern cross-country road trip, travel narratives have infused American history and popular culture.

Many of these stories are written by people who found themselves to be “outsiders” along the way. From Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi, to John Stienbeck’s Travels With Charlie, to Jack Kerouac’s On The Road, in most of these stories the protagonist is positioned as an explorer in an exotic place—whether that be Jim Crow Alabama or the American West—on a journey of self-discovery to encounter the “real” America.

What is so compelling about travel stories? What can they teach us about American history, culture, and society? And why are there so few female road narratives?

Just in time for the summer vacation season, join Allen Pietrobon for a trip into America. After exploring the nature and impact of American travel stories, we’ll look at one specific treacherous journey in 1753; a 10-week hike into the interior of America through the wilderness in what was then enemy territory. This “road trip” to deliver a single letter would spark a war that would redraw the map and change the fate of North America forever.

Profs and Pints presents: “Caught Up in Gettysburg,” a look at the civilians near the historic battle’s front lines, with Theodore Hirt, professorial lecturer at George Washington University’s law school and licensed Gettysburg town guide.

Much attention has been focused on the military aspects of the Battle of Gettysburg, widely regarded as a turning point of the Civil War. But Union and Confederate soldiers were hardly the only ones whose fates hung in the balance during those harrowing days in July 1863.

Many residents of this Pennsylvania crossroads town endured the battle and its after-effects. Some hid in their cellars to avoid snipers and cannon fire. Others tended to the wounded in churches and their homes. A few attempted childish pranks and paid the price with their lives. The town gained more renown when Lincoln dedicated its National Cemetery in November 1863, with the Gettysburg Address having a distinct meaning to those who literally resided at a Gettysburg address. Come hear their stories and learn what it was like to have one of the nation’s bloodiest conflicts fought just outside your door.

Hirt, a member of the Gettysburg Licensed Town Historians and Guides, also will tackle a host of common questions related to the battle. Was Union victory inevitable? Could the Confederacy have prevailed if its generals had been more decisive? It is true that Lincoln “jotted down” notes for the Address on scrap paper during his train ride from Washington, and that he and the media regarded the Address as a failure? (Advance tickets: $12. Profs and Pints presents: “Britain Beneath the Frosting,” a look at Brexit, baking shows, and other ingredients of a troubled empire, with Sam Wetherell, lecturer on British and World History at the University of York.

Through TV shows, tourist attractions, children’s books, and royal marriages, Britain has done a clever job of rebranding itself and making its history and character more palatable to other nations. For most Americans, references to its past conjure up visions of steam trains and drafty country where deferential servants looked after dim-witted aristocrats. The Great British Baking Show, with its verdant settings, prominent flags, and carefully cultivated niceness, represents the epitome of how today’s Britain has been idealized.

Could it be, though, that almost everything Americans understand about Britain, its history, and its place in the world is wrong? Is a nation what created the world’s most gigantic empire, and spent centuries violently remaking the world in its own image, maintaining a positive reputation through sleight of hand?

With the sunset of its industry and empire, and with its attempted imminent departure from Europe, Britain is a country unsure of what to do with itself. The purpose of its large cities, which sprang up during the industrial revolution, is increasingly unclear. Its economic prospects are uncertain, its place in the world in doubt. It turns to baking as spectator sport to keep its mind of its growing irrelevance. Its own relationship with its history is distorted by nostalgia and amnesia, with its imperialism celebrated, its past racism forgotten.

How did we get here? And what does any of this have to do with biscuits, crumble, and tarts? Hear such questions tackled by Sam Wetherell, the author of a forthcoming book on how Britain’s urban landscape and culture were reimagined throughout the twentieth century.
