2017, what a time to be alive! It’s kind of a little bit like that feeling you get when you’re in a creepy, isolated house with lots of glass windows at nighttime // you don’t want to look outside because it’s terrifying, but also, you should probably do it anyway just in case there is a psychopathic murderer standing in the woods. A REAL SOPHIE’S CHOICE, Y’KNOW?! It’s enough to drive any decent human being mad, so we’ve decided to ask friends and other cool people to give their two cents on how to remedy the insanity with self-care, whether it’s through YouTube videos, pictures of puppies, pizza…WHATEVER! 

Today’s sanity advice comes from the inimitable KAYLEE DUGAN OF BYT FAME! She says…

“Hi! I’m BYT’s editorial assistant / social media dude! It’s a weird world we live in right now and Thursday are usually particularly lame days for me because I read a lot of Douglas Adams growing up and sucked in all that Thursday hatred.

Anyway, here are the things getting my through this day, and hopefully through this entire goddamn year.

I’ve started meditating every morning because I really want to become a less stressed out person in 2017, so I highly recommend kicking off your day with the Headspace app. It’s only 10 minutes long, so it’s not a huge time commitment, and starting your day with some mindful breathing exercises instead of staring at your phone is probably (definitely) a good thing.

This morning I’m making everyone in the office listen to Dead Man’s Bones. Ryan Gosling’s weird Halloween children’s choir band. I listened to this album a lot in high school. It’s very silly. Here’s my favorite song from the record.

Also, In The Room Where You Sleep was played in The Conjuring so that’s fun.

I’ve also been ending every night watching OJ: Made In America and my lord if you haven’t started this 7+ hours long doc yet you need to get fucking on it. It might be horrific and weird and upsetting, but it’s so engrossing and well done, that for an hour every night I’m sucked back in time and suddenly it’s 1995. Anything that makes me forget it’s 2017 is alright in my book.

Finally, I spend most of the days before NYE curled up on a couch with my best friend watching Bob Ross on Netflix and I could not recommend it enough. I don’t think there’s a TV show that’s ever been more soothing and light hearted. Grab yourself a beer, roll a joint, take some deep breaths, do whatever you have to do to get yourself into a calm happy place and let the episodes play.

 

Finally, in times like these I highly recommend breakfast tacos. I made some for dinner last night and they were easy and delicious. Bad things might be happening around you but it’s important to take care of yourself! Making one of your favorite dishes for dinner is just one way to do that.
