This week in BYT food:
- The first ever VinoFest hits Union Market in less than two weeks, and we interviewed the founders.
- Noelia Italain Kitchen arrives in downtown and we really hope the food tastes as good as the restaurant looks, because it’s gorgeous.
- Urbana joins the ranks of very smart restaurants with gluten free menus, and the selection is almost overwhelming.
- The latest installment of Donut Diaries takes us to Kane’s Donuts and ends up being a weirder adventure than usual (if that’s even possible).
- There’s lots of reasons to leave DC this summer– and food related festivities are up there.
- The DC Crabcake Competition returned, and we weren’t too pressed over who won because everything was delicious.
- G held a Gravy Dinner. Yes, this is something you want to eat.
- Masa 14’s spring menu reminds of a cooler, less humid time when it still actually felt like spring.
- The Union BBQ was pretty light on the BBQ and heavy on the bass. But we got some food photos anyway.
- We came, we saw, we ate, we ran to the next place, ate, and took selfies with José Andrés at Dine & Dash.
- Y’all ready for some brunch this weekend? Here are five new ones to try.
- Happy hour hotline: with all the World Cup-related specials you desperately need.
Upcoming food events:
- Tomorrow, the Fainting Goat kicks off a monthly series of Third Thursday gallery nights to showcase their newest local artist exhibits. Come for the art, stay for the prosecco and free bites.
- Tomorrow is also Fell’s Point Crab Fest. If there’s a reason to head to Baltimore this summer, this is it.
- Apparently tomorrow isn’t busy enough– History & Hops returns to the Heurich House Museum and features Adroit Theory Brewing.
- On Friday, RFD hosts an evening with Lagunitas Brewing for a five-course dinner with beer pairings and seasonal fare.
- This Saturday, Spike Mendelsohn returns to Hill Center for a Vietnamese cooking class full of pho.
- Bourbon Bash is this Saturday, and VIP tickets are still up for grabs!
- Silver Spring refuses to be left out of the boozy festivities and throws a Midsummer Wine fête on Saturday, too.
- It’s strawberry season (and a short one, too), so there are strawberry festivals left and right in the next couple weeks.
- Chouffe Fest is also Saturday. Basically, you won’t be sober on Saturday.
- Take a few days to sober up, and then come back for Pisco Fest on Tuesday. Competing mixologists means impressive drinks.
- Tuesday is also industree’s latest speaker panel– a DMV food truck panel, hosted at the Dolcezza Gelato factory.
- Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival hits DC this time next week, and where there’s music and storytelling, there’s food!
Everything else that’s fit to eat (and drink):
- Time is (for once) causing a stir with their latest feature on butter and the “war on fat.“
- The 24 Hours of Eating feature in this week’s City Paper shows you how to get the most out of DC in the timespan of one day. We want to know how many people have eaten their way through this, too.
- McDonalds is apparently the least favorite among all fast food restaurants. Apparently 20 nuggets for $5 just isn’t enough.
- Looking for “traditional” ramen? There’s more to it than that.
- It’s grilling season, so don’t look like a doofus when buying meat. Here are five things to look for when selecting the perfect cut.
- You can send your kids to chef camps. Probably the smartest move if you’ve always wanted your own personal chef.
- Does the Starbucks tuition program sound too good to be true? That’s because it is.
- Teenagers don’t care about craft beer. They’re not that choosy.
- SeriousEats has the best late night food picks in the city organized very neatly and illustrated with some glorious, glorious food porn.
