For foodies in the know, Eat Local First Week starts today here in the District. With events ranging from femivore talks to foraged cask beer tastings, the week will showcase the best in our local food scene, and what they are doing to create a sustainable food model.
Over at Common Good City Farm, this is the goal every week. Tucked away by a neighborhood playground V and 2nd streets NW, the farm appears like an oasis. And for much of the community, it is an oasis. While underserved areas around the country continue to suffer from a lack of fresh groceries, farms like this allow communities fresh, local, and often free vegetables and fruit. Last year alone, CCCF donated more than 6,300 pounds of fresh produce.
To get a better look at the farm, watch manager Anita Adalja as she speaks to children and neighbors at one of their weekly community lunches.
