How can you not love of Montreal and their androgynous superhero frontman Kevin Barnes? Everything they do is borderline insane and impossible to look away from. Their new video for “it’s different for girls” is exactly that. It’s the brand new single from their forthcoming album Innocence Reaches, out August 12 on Polyvinyl Records. For the new LP, Barnes is channeling contemporary music for the first time. The album derives much of its sound from modern day electronica and indie pop, as opposed to the 60s Beach Boys inspiration that defined the band and its fellow Elephant 6 members. The video itself is a call out against traditional cis/binary labeling. It’s an ode to gender fluidity and a strong statement about a very pertinent issue in today’s society. But you don’t have to be super cereal just to make a point. This one’s wild.

And come see of Montreal with me on September 7 at 9:30 Club.
