On to the news:

  • Sou’Wester Sommelier Carlton McCoy is hosting an appropriately named “Stir Crazy” mixology class at Sou’Wester. At Sou’Wester you’ll learn how to make three easy cocktails with ingredients they might have on hand. The cocktails include the Sou’Wester Mint Julep, the French 69 and the Naughty Toddy. Carlton will also show students how to give one of the cocktails a romantic spin in time for Valentine’s Day. $25 per person (not including tax) the class will be offered Saturday, February 13, Sunday, February 14 and Monday, February 15 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. each day. The price includes three cocktails and an assortment of Sou’Wester snacks.  To sign up call 202-787-6068.
  • The Pug is celebrating its three year anniversary this Saturday (what’s that, paper? tin?) and they’ll be raising money for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer.  $20 gets you open draft from 8:00pm – 10:00pm.
  • Zola is having a free tasting from Chateau Coupe-Roses  and Chocolate Block wine from South Africa with a rosé, red and white varieties (get it? pink, red, white…). This Friday from 5:00-7:00pm.
  • This Saturday Cork Market is offering free tastings of Champagne and sparkling wine for the V-Day holiday.
  • Looking for a very cheap V-Day date? This Sunday February 14th from 12:00pm – 5:00pm Weydandt Wines in Cleveland park will be offering a free tasting of Double Premium Confections Valentine truffles and six Champagnes for tasting.
  • Also this Sunday check out Cork from 3:00-4:30 where they will be having a special tasting of seven Champagnes for $50. Importer Brian Forsgren will lead the tasting and talk about the winemakers who work in the region. The price is $50. To RSVP e-mail [email protected].
  • The Passenger’s Columbia Room is offering a special Valentine’s menu for $49 (including tax and tip) for a glass of Champagne, two cocktails, and a small plate. Regular service starting on February 18, and watch this space for more on the Columbia Room.
  • Co Co Sala is offering three chocolate flights paired with Champagne for $50 this Saturday from 1:30-3:00pm.  RSVP to [email protected].
  • This weekend – drum roll please – is the International Food and Wine Festival, where you can find hundreds of wines to taste and cooking demonstrations to boot. Tonight’s event at PS7’s has been canceled, but they assure us that the show will go on this weekend. If you can’t make it to the Grand Tasting this weekend don’t fret – Alex and I will have you covered. Just wait.
