Public opinion is summed up in just a handful of offhand remarks. This column will tell one of these stories each week.
this weeks video: Plowed, by Sponge.
Sponge lived in the comfortably trail blazed era of post-grunge music (kurt cobain was dead when they were signed to Sony records) and were particularly present in the more glam, heroin-chic milieu that was established around Stone Temple Pilots– in fact, Sponge got their big break opening for KISS when STP suddenly dropped of the tour due to Scott Weiland’s volunteer work in Nicarau— oh no sorry, due to his drug problems.
They had two hits, one called Molly which was literally about Molly Ringwald. It differed greatly from their typical sound, and they were temporarily lumped together with the midwest bar-bands like Bodeans or Del Amitri…or even….Sister Hazel.
The second hit was more indicative of their metal inspired “hard rock” that captured the vibe of the Los Angeles hard-rock scene in 1995 which was mostly vapid attractive people in leather pants– none the less, the song was featured in two prominent films of the day, Airheads in 1994 and Empire Records in 1995, both films were about true-blue music purists standing up to corporate stooges. Being set against these stories of loveable, troubled, angst filled youths battling a world that seems just so damn unfair, the song is remembered as an anthem of desperation, alienation, dystopian depression, but most importantly for its glint of hope for a return to the days of….well, I can’t really tell. Perhaps it’s better that way.
You can probably see why Plowed evokes deep, emotional nostalgia for many people using youtube today.

first time I heard this song, I thought they were saying “shave it bare for me”, and now whenever I hear this song, I can’t help but remember my first impression…

This song sounds almost Maiden-ish.

THIS SONG IS SO ABOUT ME & MY 1987 CHEVY MONTE CARLO SS

The Monte Carlo SS isn’t an expensive vehicle to purchase. It also has dismal performance with its stock motor. Why would that specific car be your dream car? And why would you waste your time writing your stupid little comment?

AHHHHHHH EMPIRE RECORDS SOUNDTRACK FTW
I downloaded it the other night–the movie *and* the soundtrack. It’s been too long since I’ve seen that movie. AUGH!

I remember seeing a tornado in this video when I watched it in the mid-’90s, but I didn’t see one here. Does anyone know if they cut it out of the video, or am I just imagining it?

I wish I could have been a teenager when this was out. 🙁
The only good band out right now is Queens of the Stone Age…
