When you find yourself with free time on your hands, your mind will often turn to what you can do to stop yourself from twiddling your thumbs. For lots of people, DIY projects are an obvious answer, but rush into them, and you risk an epic home makeover failure!

It’s a scenario we’ve seen over and over again. In fact, on some occasions, it goes so wrong that the teams from our favorite TV shows have to be called in to fix some truly terrible DIY disasters.

That’s why it’s a good idea to go on the hunt for advice and inspiration before you tackle your next project, and one of the best places to find these are courtesy of a few top-quality interior design shows.

Here are three of the best for your viewing pleasure.

Amazing Interiors

The clue is in the name with this one. Created by Netflix, Amazing Interiors is a series that showcases some of the coolest homes in the world. Taking viewers on a whistle-stop tour of twelve truly remarkable properties, it features lots of handy ideas for DIY enthusiasts to emulate. With everything from a Scandinavian-style houseboat through to an Italian flat that shows how to really maximize your storage, it will leave you itching to get started on a project of your own.

The Great Interior Design Challenge

Originally airing in 2014, The Great Interior Design Challenge set out to find the best amateur interior designer. Setting two tasks for participants to complete, it gave each competitor a £1,000 budget and then left them to transform the area they’d been allocated. Featuring everything, from gorgeous indoor gardens to innovative upcycling projects, it offered plenty of ideas for first-time DIYers to try their hand at.

The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes

Also available on Netflix is The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes. Featuring architect Piers Taylor and TV personality Caroline Quentin, it takes viewers on a tour of dozens of insanely cool interiors. While the exteriors of these properties are also worth talking about, the designs inside are what DIY enthusiasts should be taking note of. Our favorite part of this show is its approach to innovation, with those featured having wrought incredible transformations on even the most unassuming homes.

Top tips for renovating your own property

While these three fantastic shows provide plenty of inspiration for those looking to transform their own houses, there are still a few tips that you’ll want to take note of before getting started. These include:

Being realistic about your budget

While it’s possible to create a gorgeous home even when your budget is limited, it’s also important to be realistic about what you can afford. Try to cost up any projects before you begin, to make sure you don’t have to abandon them halfway through due to a lack of funds.

Getting help from the professionals

While there’s plenty you can do to improve your home, big or particularly complex renovations may require the professionals. For example, extensive work on your garden might be best completed with the help of a reputable landscaping company, who can lend their experience and expertise. If you do decide to enlist such professionals, remember to check that they have proper landscaping insurance in place before proceeding, as this will protect both you and them against any potential mishaps.

Planning ahead

Last but not least, make sure you plan ahead before getting started on any projects. This should give you a definite goal to work towards, and will ensure that the end result is one you’re entirely happy with.
