Profs and Pints presents: “Monumental Controversies,” with Fred Bohrer, professor of art and archaeology at Hood College, art historian, and author of the website Monumental Anxiety: An Anti-Guide to the Monuments of Washington, D.C.

Even more than most cities, Washington, DC is filled with monuments and commemorative spaces, which generally serve mainly as a sort of backdrop of urban life. In the past few years, though, many public monuments in Washington and elsewhere have faced new scrutiny, criticism and even direct attack.

Chief among such controversies is the current battle over Confederate monuments, which can be found in every corner of the nation. In fact, Washington itself has a public, outdoor monument to a confederate general and KKK sympathizer—Albert Pike—disguising him as a poet and philosopher. But many other controversies also play out around monuments. Washington has several that bring up—sometimes mainly through their attempts at avoiding—questions of sexual orientation, disability, ideology, social class, and much more.

What is at stake in the new battle over monuments? How and why do monuments today have the power to inspire such vehement passions among both defenders and detractors? And just why are there so many monuments in the first place?

This talk is for anyone who has wondered about the prominent place of monuments in cities and towns, the nature of historical memory, and how things such as race, gender, sexuality, and cultural identity are inscribed in America’s public landscape. Along with tackling questions currently being raised about some monuments, it also will offer a larger historical perspective on the varieties of monuments and their development, and equip audience members with fundamental tools for understanding and analyzing monuments. We’ll look in detail at many nearby objects as well as other monuments throughout the country.

Professor Bohrer has for more than two decades written books and articles examining how tangible objects—paintings, photographs, sculptures, ancient artifacts, museum displays and more—both represent and obscure public histories. Profs and Pints presents: “Sex on the Brain,” a look at the science of sex differences, gender, and sexual orientation, with Bradley M. Cooke, adjunct associate professor of neuroscience and psychology at Georgia State University.

What makes someone gay or straight? Are there sex-based physical differences in brain structure that control behavior? To what extent is gender-typical behavior learned? What happens in the brain when we fall in love, and how do early experiences affect our ability to form attachments?

Brad Cooke researched such questions for 20 years, conducting studies of social behavior in laboratory animals, distributing questionnaires at Pride festivals, and examining the ultramicroscopic synaptic connections between neurons. Come hear him share his findings and those of other scientists who’ve made seminal contributions to our understanding of sex differences, love, and attachment.

He’ll focus on what we know about the origins of sex differences in the brain, the causes of homosexuality, and the reciprocal relationships between gonadal hormones, behavior, and brain structure known as neural plasticity. He’ll also talk about what studies of finger-length ratios have taught us about sexual orientation, and some of the cutting-edge techniques used to study brain structure and function.

Profs and Pints presents: “(African) American Revolution,” a look at the roles African Americans played in the nation’s fight for independence, with Richard Bell, associate professor of history at the University of Maryland.

As schoolchildren we’re taught that the American Revolution was about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But what did those words mean to black people caught up in that war? Just how revolutionary was the American Revolution for people of color, who faced oppression by whites on both sides of the conflict?

For many, it was the British who offered independence, promising freedom to black slaves who might be willing to desert their rebel masters and join the King’s regiments. Others, however, took up the American patriots’ cause, throwing themselves into the war effort with more enthusiasm and more on the line than many white colonists.

Come learn the stories of those on both sides. You’ll become deeply familiar with Crispus Attucks, who was slain in a hail of redcoat gunfire during the Boston Massacre, and hear about Harry Washington, the runaway slave from George Washington’s Mount Vernon who fled to British lines, served with a British artillery unit, and then sailed with the retreating redcoat army to Canada before heading off to Sierra Leone.

Such stories ask us to think about the states of the American Revolution from the black perspective. They also draw attention to the war’s mixed outcome for African Americans, as the patriot victory spurred the rise of the anti-slavery movement in northern states while helping to preserve plantation slavery in the south for generations to come.

Richard Bell, a scholar of the history and culture of the United States from 1750 to 1877 and a dedicated public historian, will captivate you in discussing this complex chapter of the nation’s history.
