Things To Do/Things To Know

311 is at Fillmore Silver Spring and I am legitimately excited for this. I’m not entirely sure if it’s for nostalgia or bucking the idea of cool or Eric Andre or the actual music. Whatever it is, I’m both happy that they’re still around and happy that they’re able to headline large venues around the world.

Dupont Underground is one of the most unique venues in D.C. They’re also programming some interesting stuff. Tonight they’re screening the 1925 version of The Lost World while local improvisational musicians improvise.

Folk/rock/anti-folk leftie legend Billy Bragg is at The Birchmere. The new stuff is just as good as the old stuff.

The first part of the Beach Drive construction is supposed to be done in August. Tours of the progress were given today. Anyone that runs on Beach Drive already knows it’s going well. The barriers by the National Zoo aren’t keeping anyone from using the Harvard entrance. (WJLA)

The City Paper has an interesting piece about cocktail consulting. This may be the most interesting takeaway: Most operators hope to hire a cocktail consultant instead of an in-house, full-time bar manager, beverage director, or similarly titled salaried employee. Chersevani puts the going rate for such an job at $80,000 a year and compares that to a consultant who can curate four menus (one for each season) for $5,000. If there are 10 drinks on each menu, that’s 40 drinks at $125 per drink. And that price folds in training, organization, and oversight.

Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington took his life last week. The remaining members of the band are raising awareness for suicide prevention. From the band’s official statement: We’re trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal. After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place.

Clean eating is a fantastic idea but for some, it’s not a wonderful reality. Dr Max Pemberton wrote an open letter for The Daily Mail (not the best source for articles and op-eds considering their entire right side of the page is tabloid fodder that encourages unhealthy lifestyles and elevates celebrity to unhealthy levels but that’s a separate debate but maybe it shouldn’t be separate but that’s not what this about) about the negative effects of clean eating. We’re mentioning it here because it’ll be in your Facebook page for the next few days.
