Metallica’s Black Album was among the three first albums I bought, along with the Wayne’s World soundtrack and Motown’s Greatest Hits.

There is no question that the opening riff of “Enter Sandman” planted the seed of the devil in me. The video for “Unforgiven” remains terrifying, and ask any mom, “The song “Nothing Else Matters” is so pretty.”

But the honor of being the Nielsen Soundscan champion doesn’t really mean that this CD is as ubiquitous as it might suggest. In fact there are several more honorable mentions for CDs that hold a more meaningful title:

The most stolen CDs of the Nielsen Soundscan Era

(shoplifted, or swiped from idiots)

1. Outkast Aquemini
The most reliable weed album of the mid 90s is somehow also the most likely to be taken by your friend’s friend who knew every word and also didn’t throw on the bag.

2. Eminem The Slim Shady LP
Early fans of Eminem were both teenaged and down for crime. It’s great for basements and the car.

3. Sublime 40 oz to Freedom
The CD that begs to be stolen. By the time the band was a hit, they were defunct and this album is loaded with party anthems that telegraph the impending demise of everyone’s favorite white reggae guy, Bradley Nowell.

4. Bob Marley Legend
One person bought this in 1991 and we’ve all been stealing that copy ever since.

5. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony E 1999 Eternal
Rap from Cleveland??? I’m too skeptical to buy it. I better just borrow this copy forever.

6. Rancid And Out Come The Wolves
It’s punk man. Sk8 or die. Nobody owns anything. You can’t steal it cuz it’s not even mine. Do you have a dollar? All the punk rockers and the moon stompers !!

7. Dr Dre The Chronic 2001 (not The Chronic)
Dr Dre fans would never steal, but this one has Eminem on it.

8. Outkast The Love Below (but never Speakerboxxx)
Ehhhh I’ll just take Andre’s side.

9. Nirvana MTV Unplugged in NY
It’s like not even a proper album. That’s not stealing.

10. Weezer Pinkerton
Everybody owns the Blue Album but who wants to buy Pinkerton? They should have just made El Scorcho a secret track on Blue.
