D.C. has needed a good old fashioned diner for quite some time. Breakfast all day, pancakes galore, milkshakes to share: all the things that make diners so perfect for, well, dining. To satisfy that need is Olivia’s Diner, a new spot in Dupont Circle.
I went over for lunch recently to sample some of the items on their menu. For those preferring lunch food, try their veggie burger. It’s housemade, and incredibly hearty. It comes topped with melted cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and avocado. (Additional toppings like roasted shallot mayo, caramelized onions, and sauteed mushrooms are also available). Choose from crispy onion rings, house-cut fries, potato chips, tater tots, or sweet potato fries on the side. In the mood for a veggie dog instead? They have that too, as well as a classic American grilled cheese, salads, and mac n cheese.
Of course, breakfast is always a win. Choose from eggs over a sweet potato hash, or freshly made pancakes that come with Vermont maple syrup. Skip the syrup if you get the cinnamon bun pancakes though; they come drizzled with with a sinfully sweet glaze that adds enough sweetness to your pancake. Waffles are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, just like they should be. Get them smothered with strawberries or nutella or both.
You may not have room for a milkshake, but you’re going to want to get one. I mean, how can your life be complete without sampling a Nutella milkshake?! See their website for specials like weekend bottomless pancakes and mimosas, and weekend happy hour until 8 p.m. with half off drinks.
