Chef Mike Isabella, of Graffiato and Top Chef fame, added to the 14th St. bustle with his new sandwich shop, G. Right around the corner from Kapnos, G became immediately popular. So much so that during the opening day fundraiser for the American Cancer Society they ran out of bread.
Sandwiches are relatively low on price, but big on flavor. Inspired by Chef Isabella’s upbringings in Jersey, the sandwiches are a mix of what he loved to eat, and what he now loves to make. The traditional Italian hero and chicken parm open up the menu, but additions like the roast suckling pig sub prove that Chef Isabella is a master of the rotisserie spit. At the moment, sandwiches are served from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily, but the shop plans to add an evening carryout service soon.
In the evenings, Chef Isabella plans to offer a tasting menu as well, beginning on August 3. Once it begins, expect a four-course meal served with a daily crudo, and dishes like aged duck breast with beet panzanella and bread crusted bass.
Because Italians are all about the family-style meals, Chef Isabella also plans to offer a Sunday gravy menu starting on August 11 and every Sunday thereafter. Simple, delicious items like caesar salad and house made spaghetti with pomodoro sauce and a traditional meat gravy with meatballs, sausage and pork shoulder will make sure that even if you’re far away from home, Mom’s-style cooking will only be a few blocks away.
