At 2333 18th street NW, The Carriage House is gone. Johnny Pistolas is open. Johnny Pistolas has $1 tacos during happy hour and $2 tacos on Tuesday. It’ll be hard to miss Carriage House.
Carriage House wasn’t a bad place. It served new American cuisine and had favorable reviews. I never went there. No one I knew went there. There are a lot of places to eat and drink in Adams Morgan and for one reason or another, Carriage House never made the list. Carriage House didn’t serve quality, no frills, reasonably priced tacos. Johnny Pistolas does.
This was going to be a First Look and Taste Test. There’s no need. The place looks the same. The decor at Carriage House is perfectly fine and so is the decor at Johnny’s Pistolas. Same great location, same views, same outdoor seating.
If you want to take in a view of 18th but don’t want to be on a roof, Johnny Pistolas is an option. If you want to watch every NFL game on giant screens while taking in a view of 18th, Johnny Pistolas is your only option.
But that’s a view. You know what 18th St. in Adams Morgan looks like. You’re on this site. This is about the food. It’s no frills, quality, too cheap for the neighborhood food. The tacos are good. Very good. The tortillas are grilled enough to give some substance to the taco. The meats are simply and well seasoned. Along with the donuts, it’s no frills food that I’d recommend to everyone, tourist and local alike. The chocolate tortilla is incredibly rich and a good option for two people with a sweet tooth.
Johnny Pistolas is the type of place every neighborhood in D.C. needs. Affordable, quality tacos 7 days a week.
