Summertime weekends are reserved for day drinking, but before you head to a rose garden or rooftop bar, consider putting some food in your stomach. Last weekend I headed to Bloomingdale, known for its friendly neighborhood joints. I stopped in for a bite at Boundary Stone, and found the pub grub at this beer-centric spot to be full of tasty surprises.

My first surprise upon arriving at Boundary Stone was realizing that they have vegetarian wings. Yup, you read that right. Seitan hot wings that are hot, spicy and smothered in a dark, savory wing sauce. We ordered a plate to start and devoured them. Even my husband (not a vegetarian) was impressed.

The restaurant offers bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys at brunch, but I went a cold, refreshing Hefeweizen from the impressive beer menu. You can’t have “wings” without beer. I felt like I should get some veggies in too, so I got the house salad appetizer, which was way better than your typical bowl of lettuce with dressing that you get at most pubs. This salad was full of snap peas, radishes, asparagus, red onion, and feta making it super crunchy and tangy.

Next up we went for broke and ordered three entrees to share, the falafel burger, the huevos rancheros, and the frittata. The burger was another pleasant surprise; it was clearly made in house and was super flavorful, I could easily taste the bold flavors of chickpeas, garlic, parsley, and cumin. It comes on a fluffy bun, topped with tomatoes and tzatziki, with fries. The tzatziki was milder than I have had before, but it may be that there wasn’t that much of it.

The frittata was moist and chock full of roasted red peppers and feta cheese. If you are looking for something on the lighter side, this is the dish for you. The huevos rancheros was the most classic brunch dish, featuring eggs over easy, black beans, tortillas and a salsa verde. If you want something especially egg-centric I would get this dish.

We were too stuffed for anything sweet, so we just had another beer and then headed out to our next day drinking destination! If you are in the neighborhood, this a chill spot for a good brunch and a cold beer.
