Profs and Pints presents: “Ask Eleanor Roosevelt,” a look at the iconic first lady’s long career as an advice columnist, with Mary Jo Binker, adjunct professor of history at George Mason University and a consulting editor for the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project at George Washington University.

Advice columnist is not the first term that comes to mind when most people think of Eleanor Roosevelt. Yet, this transformative first lady and icon of female empowerment did exactly that in two major women’s magazines for more than 20 years.

Her answers to a wide range of reader queries—on everything from world peace and race relations to how to deal with rebellious teenagers and difficult mothers-in-law—are equally surprising. There was no filter and very little spin. In fact, her answers to readers’ queries were so honest, forthright, and insightful, that her editors felt compelled to issue a disclaimer saying her views were her own and did not represent those of the magazine or, in the column’s early years, the Roosevelt Administration.

This talk will introduce you to this other Eleanor Roosevelt, a woman whose wise, witty, and surprisingly sensible opinions remain as relevant as the latest tweet. The speaker, historian Mary Jo Binker, has spent almost twenty years studying Eleanor Roosevelt’s written and spoken record, primarily as an editor at the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project at George Washington University. Besides working as part of an editorial team that has published two volumes of Eleanor Roosevelt’s post-White House papers, she edited two collections of Eleanor Roosevelt’s writings, If You Ask Me: Essential Advice from Eleanor Roosevelt and What Are We For: The Words and Ideals of Eleanor Roosevelt.

Profs and Pints presents: “The Science of Inspiration,” a look at how the brain creates, with Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman, professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at George Washington University and co-author of The Molecule of More.

Creative ideas seem to come out of nowhere, often popping into our heads, fully formed, with no apparent work being done on our part. Come learn what neuroscience tells us about the creative process from Dr. Lieberman, who previously gave fantastic Profs and Pints talks on brain chemistry and politics based on his book The Molecule of More: How a Single Chemical in Your Brain Drives Love, Sex, and Creativity―and Will Determine the Fate of the Human Race.

He will review five strategies that activate the creative parts of the brain, with illustrations from ancient history and modern life.
