Profs and Pints presents: “Why It’s Better Than You Think,” with Barton Edgerton, research analyst, former writer for Global Risk Insights, former instructor at Tufts University and the London School of Economics, and visiting fellow at Harvard University.

You probably don’t know how good people on earth have it. If that’s the case, you aren’t alone.

Sure, recent events in the West–many political in nature–have given us reason to fear that here democracy is on the decline, authoritarianism is on the rise, and a long peace buttressed by robust international institutions stands on the verge of collapse. All valid concerns.

But look at the big picture over the long term, and you’ll find reason to conclude that the world’s population is in a golden age. Globally, statistics show, we’ve made huge progress eradicating disease, reducing poverty and violence, discouraging suicides, and improving literacy. The world’s progress on such fronts is impressive measured over a year, staggering measured over a century, and nearly unbelievable if measured over millennia.

Forget “half empty” or “half full.” Today we’re left trying to sort out whether the glass is brimming or about to shatter on the floor. Our conflicting perceptions raise important questions, such as: What do we mean when we speak of “progress”? Is progress inevitable, or can it be reversed? Rather than being new questions, these are some of the oldest ones around. By looking to our ancient past, and to a few of our contemporaries, we can begin to come up with answers that provide important context, and perhaps end up a bit more optimistic about humanity.

Profs and Pints presents: “The Real ‘Game of Thrones,’” a look at the medieval conflict that helped inspire the hit TV series, with Sabrina Baron, assistant research professor of history at the University of Maryland at College Park.

The HBO series Game of Thrones is one of the most popular in television history, drawing more than 30 million people weekly to watch destruction, debauchery, dragons, and the brutal fight for the Iron Throne.

Come learn the history from which the show draws. It might not feature real dragons or Khaleesi, but it does have nearly all the violence, treachery, and strange family relationships. It was called the Wars of the Roses because it involved a protracted fight for England’s throne between two branches of its royal family, one represented by a red rose, the other, by a white one.

Professor Baron has extensively studied and taught the Wars of the Roses as an expert in early modern English political history. Come hear her untangle the complicated genealogical roots of the wars that have inspired other writers, including Shakespeare, to take pen to paper.

You’ll learn about deadly wine, sex and politics, the finer points of infanticide, and sibling rivalry taken to a new level. Also part of the story are women plotting, brothers flip-flopping, a few too many surviving children, and a symbolic dragon, at least.

Among the questions she’ll tackle: What happens when a child is born with a full set of teeth? How could a horse save a kingdom? Did a hunchback sit on the throne? What actual historical events, or their parallels, can be found in the Game of Thrones series? You’ll have a royally fun time hearing the answers. (Advance tickets: $12. Profs and Pints presents: “The Next Big Internet Threat,” a look at faked depictions as a weapon for damaging real people, with Joshua A. Geltzer, founding executive director and visiting professor of law at Georgetown’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection.

Americans are worried about what’s happening online, and they should be. In recent months, we’ve seen social turmoil over the deletion of controversial accounts from digital platforms like Facebook and Twitter; public disclosure of criminal charges for continuing Russian interference in our elections; and new types of disinformation operations emanating from Moscow, Tehran, and even here in the United States.

But these latest incidents are only part of a far bigger trend. In our novel digital age, it has become far too easy for bad actors to spread harmful content far and wide, swiftly and with just the click of a button.

All told, the Internet age has seen four major waves of digital threats. First came child pornography. Next came trolling. Then we endured terrorist recruitment and radicalization online. And most recently we’ve suffered from foreign election interference. None of these challenges has been entirely resolved, and the more recent of them remain serious threats, not just to the integrity of online dialogue but to American security and democracy. But the fifth wave is now fast upon us—and it might prove the thorniest of all. Call it “reputational exploitation.” It’s the false disparagement of others–other individuals, other companies, even other governments–for one’s own benefit. And it’ll only get more effective through the use of “deep fakes,” which play off the universal temptation to equate seeing with believing, and artificial intelligence, which can tailor reputational assaults to particular micro-audiences to maximize their effectiveness.

Join Professor Joshua Geltzer of Georgetown Law’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection to discuss the waves of digital threats we’ve endured and those yet to come. He’ll discuss these challenges, the responses so far, and what more needs to be done to protect our digital domain and, ultimately, ourselves. (Advance tickets: $12.
