Howard Lester will be introducing Coup Sauvage & The Snips this Saturday at the Super Sampler at the Howard Theatre. So we asked Mr. Lester to interview the band. Now they’re friends.

When you think of the music that you hear these days, sometimes it can be a bit confusing who you’re listening to because most it sounds the same: enter Coup Sauvage & The Snips. These DC’s local’s name’s seem to be on everyone’s lips. Up and comers? No way, LEGENDS…and if you didn’t know, I think they’ll make it clear that they own everything.

How excited are you all to perform at the historic Howard Theatre?

We don’t take it lightly that we’ll be in the same room where some of our spirit guides performed back in the day. We’ll be channeling some Martha & The Vandellas, Chuck Brown, and Stevie Wonder that night. We think it’s important to pay homage to those that came before us and also honor DC’s history, instead of contributing to its erasure and commodification.

Words that describe Coup Sauvage & The Snips?

Glamorous, radical, delusional. Three more words: We. Own. Everything.

What should people expect from your stage show?

Church fans, sequins, the Laurel shuffle. Also, for one night only you will all become honorary children of the Haus of Sauvage. But you should know, there are some Haus rules to follow. 1) Ass shaking is mandatory. 2) Turn in Haus dues by the 5th of the month. 3) We share a Netflix queue in this haus and Animal Odd Couples must always be number 1.

How fierce are you all going to look?

We’ll be giving you some Dominique Devereaux after a night out at Paradise Garage circa 1984 fierceness.

Any EP or album plans for the near future?

We’re recording songs for our first album now. We just released our debut single “Sneaks.” It’s available on Bandcamp, you can check out the video here. Be on the lookout for our next single and video “Heir to Nothing.”

What is the best way to keep up with Coup Sauvage & The Snips?

You could never keep up with us. But if you’d like to try, you can find us on Facebook or Twitter. Follow us so can you find out about upcoming shows, Snips tips, and our new bakery Gentrifi-Cake-tions. We make DC themed desserts like the Marion Bavarian cream donut and a line of Ian MacPies.

Stranded in the desert, what 3 things does the band need to survive?

We would never be in the desert, the heat does nothing for our hair. But if somehow we found ourselves in that situation, we’d need a copy of The Wiz soundtrack, a DVR so we can catch up on Scandal, and a private jet.

When your set wraps up at the Howard, what will people being saying about Coup Sauvage & The Snips?

We like to leave crowds speechless. But if they manage to get anything out, it’s usually along the lines of “10, 10, 10’s across the board”.

Gladys Knight or Diana “The Boss” Ross?

We could never choose between two of our favorites! Why does society pit women against each other?!?!? And where is Tata Vega?!?!?

What song do you have that captures the voice of the band? Will you be performing the song?

Our song “Heir to Nothing” is classic Sauvage. It’s a gospel-house rave-up that’s equal parts club jam and agit-pop protest music. It’s all about how your food truck will not protect you. Your condo will not protect you. Get it together, “urban pioneers” of DC. We’re watching you (and your $5 artisanal sodas).

Jason Voorhees or Freddy Kreuger? Go.

Patrick Bateman. ‘Cause Bret Easton Ellis is scarier than both of them put together.

At the end of the Coup Sauvage & The Snips era will there be anything you haven’t accomplished?

There is no end to the era of Sauvage. We are timeless. We are legendary. We plan on touring, writing more kiss-off songs, creating more DC-themed desserts, and making the children move.

Can I touch your hair?

Listen closely, cause we’re only gonna say this once: Don’t touch our hair. Don’t you even dare.
