SUMMER RULES is a series where we ask people to share with us how they’re staying safe and sane during this very different summer season; from mask suggestions to soundtrack selections, we’ll take a peek into how others are making these challenging times work.

Today we’ve got Madge (Pussy Riot collaborator and procurer of mega proto-pop vibes; check out their debut EP, Ethanol (Multiverse)) on the line to tell us how they’re staying cool this summer; gua sha, socially distanced garage hangs and Bermuda Hundreds are KEY:

How do you usually feel about summer, as a season overall, and how do you feel about THIS summer, by comparison?

I don’t care for summer. I usually bank on being able to find a public pool to handle it so this summer sucks major. BYE.

What is your summer shaping up to look like?

Dark and cave-like. I hope to emerge with at least another album if I will be forced to give in to my insanity.

Is there anything in particular you’re actually looking forward to this summer?

I am actually excited to be forced to get creative in the studio.

What are some of your tips for staying safe and sane right now?

I think that scheduling social activity – whether virtual or in a park, etc. – is pretty crucial for mental health.

Go-to summer wellness practice advice? Any spots in particular that have been helping you on that front?

Stretching and gua sha! I ordered a gua sha kit online and give myself face massages almost everyday.

Where did you get your mask from? And what, aside from that, has been your more or less go-to summer uniform?

I already had a lot because I think they look cool hahaha… I realize that I might have manifested this horrible thing for everyone with that aesthetic decision. My go-to is giant tee shirts worn like dresses generally.

What (if anything) are you reading right now, and why do you recommend it? (Alternatively, just share a favorite book.)

I am reading a lot of things! I am re-reading Dune and just started a nonfiction book called Anti-Diet which is essentially about how dieting is a capitalist ploy. Very gratifying.

Do you have a go-to summer hang-out recipe that still works for a socially distanced gathering? And/or just a favorite general summer recipe that’s still a go-to, even now?

My friends have a garage and I’ve been enjoying open garage hangs with them. There are four of us and we each sit in a corner of the garage while listening to music and drinking whiskey.

What about a great summer cocktail or mocktail recipe?

Just discovered a Bermuda Hundred and hoooo baby it’s dangerous! It’s gin, pineapple juice, campari, lime, and orgeat.

What’s on your summer playlist this year, or are there three songs that are permanent summer favorites for you?

I don’t listen to much music to be honest – I find myself listening to my own songs on repeat to critique them and learn. I have however, spent some time with The Smashing Pumpkins recently and I’m not sad about it. So I guess “1979”, “Tonight, Tonight”, and “Cherub Rock”…

Where do you wish you COULD GO this summer, if there were no restrictions or safety risks?

Somewhere in southern France for suuuuure….

And is there anywhere you’ve been safely going that you could recommend for people who live nearby? Any day trips or local spots worth mentioning, for example?

I think there are a lot of reliable nature spots still available! I love the Angeles Forest on a weekday personally…
