The official site for Star Wars Episode VII just announced its cast. The site cannot load – too many fans are trying to login at once – but here’s the part that matters:
Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.
Of the new cast members, Isaac, Driver, Serkis, and von Sydow are seasoned and quite reliable. What about the relative unknowns? You may recognize John Boyega as Moses from 2011’s Attack the Block. Daisy Ridley is a relative unknown, while Domhnall Gleeson (son of Brendan) is about to take the indie scene by storm in the upcoming weirdo black comedy Frank.
This is exciting news, yet I have one minor gripe. With Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac in the cast, casting directors have 2/3rds of the trio that performed “Please Mr. Kennedy” in Inside Llewyn Davis. Why not complete the trifecta by adding Justin Timberlake, if only for one scene? It’s a wasted opportunity, if you ask me. Then again, maybe Timberlake is the only one who really meant he doesn’t want to go to outer space. OUTER! SPACE!
STAR WARS EPISODE VII will release on December 18, 2015.
