To get to know the bands that BYT and The Hamilton will feature as part of the upcoming DC Emerging Artists Super Sampler, Vol. 1 on April 6, enjoy this questionnaire  series we’ll be rolling out this week. Today we have all four members of Shark Week:

Shark Week–easily one of D.C.’s most popular current rock bands–is a four piece that brings the noise. Whether it’s blues-tinged indie, straight-up surf rock or garage, Shark Week plays it with skill and precision (without sacrificing any fun). We asked them some of their favorite D.C. spots, recent music, celebrity dream parents and more to get YOU in the know about this band you’ve gotta hear. It should also be noted that this post is punctuated by some great shots from our Emerging Artists fashion profiles, which can be found right over here.

  • Name
    Dan Newhauser (drums, vox)

What has been your worst job ever and why?
Telemarketing window sales in England when I was 15. I didn’t have a work visa, so I had to use a classmate’s bank account for direct deposit. But she developed a drug problem and stole all my money. The work was soulless, I never got paid and all anyone wanted to talk about was why an American was calling to sell windows.
If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?
    Tofu fajitas.
Pick two celebrities to be your parents.
    Freud and Oedipus.

What is the last piece of art (music, movie, book, gallery piece, plastic floating in the wind) that blew you away?
As a guy who hits things with sticks and has an irrational fear of Commie polar bears, the Efterklang documentary, The Ghost of Piramida, really spoke to me.

    Ginger Baker.
Do you have any sort of rituals or supersititions before you hit the stage?

  • Name
    Alberto Jose Pacheco (guitar, vox)
    Hometown
    Houston, TX
Who is your favorite artist – old or new, popular or obscure – and why?
Mark Twain, or Voltaire? HG Wells, or Phillip K Dick? Anthony Burgess, or George Orwell? Django Reinhardt or Jimi Hendrix? i like thinkers!
What’s your favorite current trend in music – or – What’s your least favorite?
Fav = people picking up guitars / playing an instrument. Least Fav = dubstep / autotune
What has been your worst job ever and why?
High school job at country club (waiting on and running errands for privileged suburban a-holes). On the plus side, I learned a myriad of golfer excuses intended for use on the common housewife and had nighttime access to golf cart shenanigans.
If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?
I’d rather we smoke instead. Frozen pizza? Do I have avocados?
Pick two celebrities to be your parents.
Warren Beatty & Julie Christie in “Shampoo” or Charlie Chaplin & Paulette Goddard in “Modern Times”
What’s your favorite drunkfood spot in the DMV?
I live in Baltimore, so my late night DC whereabouts knowledge is most definitely limited. I’d say either “the house” in park view or that late-night pizza place Dan took me to where we couldn’t stop singing out-loud obnoxiously about jesus after our last DC show.
What is the last piece of art (music, movie, book, gallery piece, plastic floating in the wind) that blew you away?
There Will Be Blood (movie) & The Holographic Universe (book).
Who would you love to play alongside someday?
The Growlers, maybe? Musical vibage, you know. Or Chan Marshall? Mmmmm. Westerberg? Haha I dunno, this is starting to sound so pipe-dreamy to me that I feel like I should say McCartney!
Do you have any sort of rituals or superstitions before you hit the stage?
I recall an interview with Tom Waits in which he said “never play a show w/ money in your pocket; you gotta play like you need the money”. Something like that. So that’s my only thing, although sometimes I forget or have too much going on so you’ll see me taking things out of my pockets and putting them on my amp as we start. Empty those pockets, son!

I’m a bad follower of current music so I can’t answer this question with any authority.
