It’s 8:47 am on a sunny Wednesday morning in Arlington, Va., and in Pentagon City Mall’s Fashion District are a few hundred people waiting in line. Some are sleeping, some are standing, some are talking, but they all have one thing in common. Turns out, they’re lining up for the opening of the Microsoft’s 21st store opening According to Microsoft, the second one in the “D.C. area.” Unfortunately, it isn’t actually in the District, but what can you do? There weren’t any Apple stores in D.C. until June 2010 anyway, so they’re not all that far behind.

So why were people lined up for the opening of a Microsoft Store? That largely has to do with Microsoft’s advertising campaign, with the ultimate carrot on a stick being the chance to go to a Weezer concert on Saturday, August 11. It wasn’t all that surprising when I went through the line and asked what people were there for. The first answer was, of course, Microsoft. The second answer was, also unsurprisingly, “I’m here for Weezer.”

Stars for the Day!

All of the Microsoft Store amenities are present and accounted for: the Answer Desk for support, the theater in the back for events, and the spaces for the different Microsoft product lines.

If you’re ever in Pentagon City Mall and need to get your fix of Microsoft, look for the Sephora and the Guess store. It’s sitting smack in the middle. You can’t miss it.

PS – I contemplated going around and synchronizing the laptops to play “Gangnam Style” but Big Burly Security Guy was having none of it.

PPS – A number of people, including 22-year-old Zack Ludwig were actual fans of Microsoft Office. He was first in line.

ed. note: The band’s official webmaster Karl Koch said on his recurring Karl’s Corner column:

Today Team Weezer assembled in Washington D.C. at the Warner Theater, for a special free show. The free tickets were only available to people who lined up at the grand opening of the new Microsoft Store in Pentagon City, VA, across the Potomac River. They got wristbands that got them into the show today, which was an early afternoon thing

Here’s their set list at the Warner Theatre with a few press clips thrown in:
