Each year The Movember Foundation asks men to grow mustaches for the month of November to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues. Since it’s inception in 2003 in Australia The Movember Foundation has been able to raise over half a billion dollars worldwide the bulk of which goes to Prostate Cancer and Testicular Cancer research. So far this year The Movember Foundation has been able to raise $98 million worldwide and over $19 million here in the United States.
H St Movemberfest is an annual celebration of men’s health on the H St. corridor in NE. The all ages event was able to raise over $2,000 last year in it’s inaugural event and over $2,500 this year for The Movember Foundation. Restaurants, retail establishments, fitness centers, local entertainment, barber shops, and salons all participated this year offering discounts to those that were participating. The long term goal of this event is to have an annual celebration of the diverse northeast neighborhood raising money for The Movember Foundation and greater awareness of men’s health issues.
I’m often surprised at the very real impact that Movember can make on people’s lives. I have herd multiple stories through my involvement with Movember of men that were motivated to get an annual checkup and then found issues that needed to be checked further and resolved. I’ve met cancer survivors and relatives of those fighting cancer that directly benefit from the cancer research that The Movember Foundation funds. H St Movemberfest aims to further this worthy cause by offering a day of fun for all ages on H St and looks forward to H St. Movemberfest 3 in the fall of 2014.
