The buzz (of tattoo needles) was certainly present at 5th DC Tattoo Expo, yet the event was significantly (and sadly, so) different from years past in its under-representation of local D.C. artists. Notably absent were previous attendees–Fatty’s, Tattoo Paradise, British Ink, Jinx Proof…Unable to make causal attributions for this state of affairs, I can only conjecture that as the adage goes, nothing lasts forever. Even tattoos, apparently.
Nevertheless, enough good things were happening to make this event worthy of a visit. Matthew Wojciechowski, who has moved from Jinx Proof to Bethesda Tattoo, shared with us that he has seen a burgeoning interest in South Asian-themed pieces which seems to be eclipsing the Japanese obsession of years past.
Paul Loh, of 407 Tattoo, ventured to predict that the new “tramp stamp” of 2015 would be big “underboob” tattoos, which have been growing in popularity. He also commented that big watercolor-esque pieces are also really in.
