The most exciting time of the year for libraries all across the United States is coming up! Banned Books Week is almost upon us, and even though DCPL’s central location is under renovation, this years celebration of transparency and knowledge is shaping up to look better than ever. This year, the theme is the sadly appropriate Texts Against Tyranny, so it looks like we’ll see special attention to those dystopian novels we all know and love.
Just like last year, DCPL and friends are kicking everything off with a book scavenger hunt that will take place all over the city through the month of September. Picks include The Handmaid’s Tale, Fahrenheit 451, We and much more. Location clues will be announced everyday, so keep your eyes peeled and follow DCPL to keep up to date on all the hints.
While there will be many more events to celebrate Banned Books Week, the crown jewel is DCPL’s kickoff cocktail party, Uncensored, which will be taking place at Dupont Underground this year. Expect book themed cocktails from some of D.C.’s best bartenders (including the folks at the Columbia Room), live music, art installations, a pop-up market and much much more. As always, it’s going to be a blast. Get your tickets now and remember to use your library card liberally.
