It’s time for Oyamel’s annual Tequila and Mezcal festival, and this year the staff is mixing things up with a new theme: Mexican chiles. Each of the special dishes and cocktails served during the two week festival will feature one of Mexico’s many exotic chiles. For those who like life with a little bit of spice, this festival is calling your name.
The preview party took place on February 25, 2015 and featured a live band, an assortment of small bites, and of course, the opportunity to sample all of the special tequila and Mezcal cocktails, expressly devised by beverage director Jasmine Chae for this annual festival.
The passed hors d’oeuvres included mini tacos, ceviche served in a little spoons, warm tortillas served with fresh guacamole, cups of cactus paddles tossed in passila de Oaxaca chili oil with queso fresco, serrano chilies, and pickled onions, and, for something sweet, chili-infused Mexican chocolate cookies which are INSANELY good.
The drinks were even better. There was a refreshing cucumber cocktail, with lemon, tequila, and serrano chilies; a seasonal Mezcal beverage with grapefruit juice, and jalapeno infused grapefruit soda; a pretty sour orange drink with Mezcal, habanero chili, and bitters; and finally a chili infused tequila concoction made with vermouth and orange and served with a single spherical ice cube.
