stephanie | Feb 27, 2013 | 9:08AM |

If you couldn’t tell, we are SO EXCITED for our First-Annual BYT DONUT FEST this Saturday at Penn Social, where’s we’ll be gettin’ into a glaze haze with all-you-can-gorge free samplins of  D.C.’s best doughnuts and baked goods, and who better to get you pumped than the bakers themselves? We asked all of our friends participating in Donut Fest to clue us in on what they’re brining Saturday, their top picks for doughnut beverages, cartoons and more…

We’ll have bites from the newest sweets shops in the DMV area (some haven’t even opened yet) as well as the never-anything-bad-on-the-menu staples from the District dining community. There will be eating competitions and dancing and stuffing our faces and stuffing out faces some MORE. (Oh, and did we mention Crunch Gym is offering a 3 month membership with a PT sesh for the donut eating contest winner??) We’ve also just added King Street Bluegrass to the bill – cause you know, doughnuts and bluegrass.

There will also be an INCREDIBLE Anheuser Bush tap takeover with beer from Rogue, Troegs, Widmer Brothers, Goose Island, Devils Backbone, Old Dominion, Kona Brewing Company, Smuttynose Brewing Company and Victory Brewing Company, plus some BEER AND DOUGHNUT PAIRINGS. Heavenly.

Sadly, tickets for the event are 100% SOLD OUT but you can get yourself on a wait list right over here. And now without further ado, THE CONTENDERS:

  • Jackie’s
Tell us a little bit about yourself (Haiku poem format always welcome)
We strive to serve the highest quality international cuisine in a relaxed and retro neighborhood atmosphere. We’ve been in business since 2004, and have been cranking out some of the most decadent doughnuts in the area for the past couple of years. Come visit us for dinner daily, but you’ll only get our crazy good doughnuts at Sunday brunch!
What’s your signature doughnut (or doughnut-like treat)?
Our signature doughnut is a raised (aka yeast) dough that’s packed with butter and slowly rises over a 3 day period before being cooked to order. Diners pick from a selection of 3 handcrafted glazes: Raspberry, Dulce de Leche, and Chocolate. The doughnuts are hit with a smattering of sprinkles and delivered piping hot. My personal favorite is the Dulce de Leche, but the Raspberry has something of a cult following.

So I was always like, “what the hell,” because the story would progress in one way for weeks and then all of a sudden, they would show reruns or start a new story line and never finish what they started πŸ™

  • Zeke’s DC Donutz
    Pastry Chef Stephanie MacGlaughlin

Tell us a little bit about yourself (Haiku poem format always welcome)
I was raised in an Irish/Itaian household outside Philly, food is the main event at every holiday. I have been in DC for 7 years now, and working for Aaron (Gordon) for 4 years now, starting at Red Velvet Cupcakery as a er growing to be their Pastry Chef, now I am the Pastry Chef and Manager at Zeke’s DC Donutz. Before that I was the Pastry Assistant at Zengo, a Richard Sandoval Restaurant, in Chinatown DC and the Pastry Assistant at Susanna Foo’s in Philly. I have come to learn that food makes the world go round, it brings people together, it spreads joy and happiness. It can transform a day, or a persons mood- it is nice to be able to give back to the communites, and cheer people up one at a time.
What’s your signature doughnut (or doughnut-like treat)?
We do not have a signature donut. We do not feel the need to put a limit on the flavors that we can create or should have at any moment, after all the possibilites are endless!
What are you bringing on Saturday?
We are going to showcase 6 flavors from our store like Sexy Mexy–A rich spicy Mexican chocolate filled donut topped with a sweet ancho chile glaze, Chocolate Frosted–An induglant Valrhona chocolate glaze with Caramela pearls sprinkled atop, Wake me up before you Go-Go, Mocha–A robust coffee glazed donut with a drizzeling of chocolate mocha, Sweet Passion–A sweet but tangy passion fruit glazed donut complimented by cocoa nibs, Vanilla ICE–Our take on a classic glazed donut, where good qualtiy and simple flavors meet. Madagascar Bourbon–vanilla beans are blended into a simple vanila glaze, Peanut Butter Bacon–A balance of salty and sweet, a silky peanut butter frosting is topped with crunchy salty bacon! We may have a few suprise flavors that show up, but that will be the flavors that I am bringing for sure!
In a fantasy world, whom do you envision glazing your doughnuts?
Fantasy and donuts… this could go good or bad! I think just because I heart myself Richard Gere from Pretty Women I would say, him. Okay, or but this is only if I cannot have Richard Gere from Pretty Women….I would say Jullia Child for the simple fact that she was awesome and I used to watch her all the time.
What’s the #1 beverage to enjoy with your treat?
You cannot really go wrong with a cold glass of milk when you are at our store, we have a few for everyone to choose from. We have Momofoku inspired cereal milks, as well as some milk boxes to feel like a kid again.
If your doughnut (or doughnut-ish treat) were a D.C. celebrity, which would it be?
Oh that’s hard, it could be a lot of people, we have a large list of flavors to roll out yet, to pick a donut flavor that is like a celebrity…I can’t. I think I am going to go with Marvin Gaye or Dave Chappelle. They have both have reached many different (types of) people and spread smiles and joy while doing so. Art, music, and comedy can all bring people together. So do donutz!
Do you spell it doughnut or donut?
Donut… ’cause we are cool like that.
What’s your favorite Saturday Morning Cartoon?
I am going to have to go older school… School House Rock or Animaniacts were my favorites as a kid.
    bacon
