As the District slowly – and cautiously – begins to adjust to our new reality, our city’s creatives are looking for ways to express themselves while lifting up others in solidarity. Unsurprisingly, food and art are at the center of these community-focused efforts.

Carry Out & Rogue is the brainchild of Alexandra Moriarty, a DC chef with 20 year roots in the District and a deeply held passion for the arts and social justice. In partnership with Amir Browder, owner of HOMME Gallery DC, the monthly event series celebrates the work of DC-based visual artists, pairing a showing of their work with food that’s easy to eat on the go – Moriarty’s favorite way to snack.

This month’s event features the work of Marly McFly, a self-taught visual artist whose work boldly mixes street art and pop art to provide tongue-in-cheek commentary on society. McFly’s art will be on display inside HOMME Gallery (part of the 52 O Street Studios artist co-op) and available for socially-distant viewings upon arrival. You can purchase raffle tickets ($10/ticket) for a chance to win an original piece, or you can do a combo for $20 that includes a spiced rum cereal milkshake, the perfect cocktail for a hot summer day.

The menu includes palm sized tacos with achiote braised pulled pork, salsa verde and pineapple or harissa marinated pulled lamb, caramelized carrot slaw & dill yogurt sauce. As someone who is familiar with Moriarty’s cooking (full disclosure: we’re friends) I promise you that you can’t go wrong with either option.

Proceeds will go towards supporting the artist and HOMME Gallery, a black-owned art space operating since 2014. A portion of the funds raised will also benefit the DC chapter of Concerned Black Men, a community-driven program committed to caring for youth through guidance and support. Pre-orders for this week’s event are available here and available until sold out.

Carry Out & Rogue is this Saturday, July 18 from 3-6pm ET at HOMME Gallery DC (52 O Street NW, bottom floor). Read more about Marly McFly and purchase his work at www.marlymcfly.com.
