This Saturday, I attended the sold out Brutal Truth / Pig Destroyer /Total Fucking Destruction / Triac / Abiku show at the Talking Head Club. It had been a few weeks since I had seen a metal show, so I was
pretty excited, and the crowd was as well… as one guy said to a teenage girl: “as long as you like metal, it’s all good”.

I got there a little late, so missed two great Baltimore bands who were opening: Triac and Abiku. Sorry guys. But I WAS there just in time to see Total Fucking Destruction (featuring Rich Hoak of Brutal
Truth on drums) setting up. I got a chuckle when they taped down not one but TWO single-spaced sheets of song titles for their setlist…
like many grindcore bands, TFD’s songs are very very very short (30 seconds at most would be my guess), so those two pages only lasted maybe 30 minutes. The crowd was into it, doing some shoving and moshing… but the short format of the songs kept things from getting too wild…

Pig Destroyer, however, took the crowd to the next level… PD destroyed, with a wall of distorted samples and live literal metal grinding (like… with machine shop tools complete with flying sparks) filling out the atmosphere. I have seen Pig Destroyer probably two dozen times, but it’s rare to see them in a club as small as the head, so it was a special treat. The crowd responded, pitting like crazy at several points, and spilling onto the stage constantly.

Brutal Truth (featuring Dan Lilker of Nuclear Assault, SOD, and Anthrax on bass), recently reformed after years on hiatus, came on stage announcing that the crowd was about to see some “real grindcore”, and they weren’t kidding… they killed, and they were very tight. I never saw them the first time, so I can’t compare, but I was impressed. This didn’t seem like a reunion show – more like a continuation, and I assume they will be sticking around for awhile after the tour.
