The Lunar New Year Parade is easily one of my favorite annual events in NYC, and so in spite of being mildly hungover yesterday, I resolved to head on over to Chinatown to watch. I wondered if the coronavirus panic would affect this year’s viewership, but it seemed just as well-attended as ever, and if anybody DID stay home in fear, they really missed out. Although coronavirus was part of the narrative (lots of signage offering words of encouragement to the people of Wuhan), it was mainly confetti, dragons and smiles that fueled the spectacle.
Politics (as usual) entered into the day’s themes, too, with a fairly strong Yang Gang presence (even some of the dragons were sporting MATH beanies):
