When we heard that FATBACK, BYT’s favorite sweaty, messy, no-regrets, 1000-person dance party of the last half decade decided to call it a day, we knew two things:
- We had to be there, since no chance in hell were we going to miss the opportunity to dance once again to “In The Basement” while sweat and tears poured down our faces.
- We had to take photos, since no chance in hell were we going to miss the opportunity to photograph all those people dancing once again to “In The Basement” while sweat and tears poured down their faces.
The first part was relatively easy to execute, but it should be noted re: part 2 that even for Dakota, who is a veteran Fatback party snapper, the temperature in the building proved a challenge. Once upstairs-the camera fogged up when faced with 90 degree temperatures and 120% humidity. Those Fatback guys did the (almost) unthinkable: they generated a full-on DC August in the middle of a (very cold, very wind chilled) DC February (see photos above and directly below: that is NOT a post-production effect, that is pure, old-fashioned condensation).
Not that anyone complained. People were too busy making the most of it to complain, ok? Other things the Fatback team delivered on:
- prom quality decorations (we do love a good balloon display)
- a live brass band
- exposed man arms
- everything else
To say we will miss it all is an understatement of our going-out lives, but at the same time–it is also good to see a party make an exit at the height of its dance-making power. For those in the mood to reminisce some more, click here for the highlight reel the guys made for us last week. Misty, sweat-colored memories all around.
