If we’re being honest, Art Whino’s Cinco de Mayo trumped all others this year in creativity alone. Think back to your Sunday and ask yourself if you watched lucha libre–real, live Mexican wrestling–while you guzzled those $5 margaritas at whatever bar you plastered yourself against for the duration of the afternoon. No? We thought not.
Celebrating over 80 years of luchadores, the art collective took over DC Fairgrounds with five hours of live music, live mural painting, Mexican street food, and luchador art exhibits, not to mention match after match of colorful wrestling complete with costumes–both traditional and new–and trash talk in not one but two languages. We stopped by and learned firsthand that lucha libre is more than masks; it’s about the performance. Check out our photos below and hold your breath D.C. gets an experience like this again:
