My introduction to Bluebrain was at their incredible Cakeblood boombox performance in collaboration with BYT, last October in Dupont (check out our photos + review). Now, after a string of shows that just get better, they’re back at the boombox game and they’ve brought their friends. Saturday afternoon they gathered together well over a hundred people on the national mall, passed out cassettes, and told everyone to press play. What followed was a 38 minute boombox symphony that Bluebrain’s own Ryan Holladay called “transcendent, sublime, holy!” (he was totally jk). And despite a slight snag due to a firetruck cutting the group in half, they managed to time the ending perfectly, leaving everyone under the cherry trees in the tidal basin, each in full bloom.
Bluebrain’s talent wasn’t on its own this time. The Brothers Holladay planned the outing with ReadySetDC and fused their own work with original pieces from Animal Collective’s Geologist, Beauty Pill, Maureen Andary, Sean Peoples, Outputmessage, Will Eastman, and BYT’s own Alfonso Bravo. If you missed it, it’s gone, but check out these photos anyway:
