Harlem’s Alibi Lounge, while relatively new (having opened in 2015), is the only Black-owned LGBTQ+ bar in Manhattan (not to mention the only LGBTQ+ bar in Harlem), and due to Covid-19, it’s having trouble staying afloat; in addition to being shuttered due to the city’s slow reopening plan, Alibi experienced a break-in during broad daylight where someone swiped all the cash from the till.
Aside from these setbacks, the venue is committed to staying open by any means; while it has been partially “reopened” to sell to-go drinks (and create some foot traffic to deter future crime), if it intends to pay rent and electricity bills for the long haul, that’s just not enough. As such, Alibi launched a GoFundMe on Monday with the goal of reaching $50,000 to cover the next six months of expenses. In the past 48 hours, donations have surpassed $33,000, but let’s help to push it the full way there!
This is an especially important safe space for the Black and Brown LGBTQ+ community, so let’s work a little Pride miracle magic to make sure it stays put for a long time yet.
