Wowee, I’m off to Spain in like…very soon! Meaning I will not be with you in body this weekend, but certainly in spirit, if only because I plan to watch the shit out of Phoebe Waller-Bridge hosting SNL on Saturday once the episode DVR’s to my YouTube TV account! (Yes, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is our GIF theme! This also feels like an appropriate time to plug Aisling Bea’s This Way Up, which is on Hulu and keeps getting compared to Fleabag! I understand the comparison but I think it is also a separate and very good beast that you should watch if you haven’t already!) Before we talk about ALL your options (which include New York Comic Con, the NY Times Food Festival, the Bushwick Film Festival, Witch School yes WITCH SCHOOL and more), let’s talk about some rad stuff you might’ve missed on BYT this week if you were too busy watching that GIF of the Finnish president being like “NO TOUCHING”:

Thursday October 3

  • Firstly, New York Comic Con kicks off at Javits Center today! It’s pretty much your only opportunity to buy a badge since all other days are sold out at this point, so grab a $55 pass!
  • You know what ELSE kicks off today? The Bushwick Film Festival! Syndicated will host, and tickets start at $12 each. (Passes are obviously more, but if you can at least scope a one-off screening, I say DO IT!)
  • Plus we’ve got Dan Savage’s HUMP Film Festival happening at House of Yes now thru Sunday! (Sold out currently, but worth investigating resale tickets!)
  • Still on that Maggie Rogers hype? She’s in conversation w/ Tavi Gevinson at 92Y tonight! Tickets are $50 a pop. (Homegirl’s really givin’ us the shakedown this week!)
  • In terms of TUNES-tunes, you can hang out w/ Samantha Urbani, Pecas and more at Baby’s All Right for $12!

  • And/or scope Surf Curse at The Dance for $20!
  • We’ve also got Ty Segall at Bowery Ballroom for $30…
  • …plus Whitney and Hand Habits are at Brooklyn Steel for $30, too!
  • More into Built to Spill? Fork over $35 and get your face to Music Hall of Williamsburg!
  • Or if you’re just broke AF, get to Rough Trade for a FREE Wives performance!
  • Over in comedy land, meanwhile, we’ve got a $15 Phoebe Robinson show at Union Hall!
  • But maybe you’re just into quirk dot com, in which case head to Littlefield for the third annual Miss Subways Extravaganza! Tickets to the subway-centric talent show are $20-$25 each.

Friday October 4

  • First, Ridgewood Open Studios are set to kick off today! Head over now thru Sunday!
  • Moving into tunes land, we’ve got round TWO of Surf Curse, this time at Rough Trade! Tickets are $16-$18 each.
  • If you’re more of a Head and the Heart kinda guy, head to Kings Theatre for a $30 show!
  • Just wanna d-d-d-d-dance? Head to 3 Dollar Bill for a $30 Chromeo DJ set!
  • Or if you like listening to things in the comfort of your own home (as I do), then grab a copy of Angel Olsen’s new LP from Rough Trade! She’s doing a free signing over there today.
  • In terms of LOLs, She Makes Me Laugh kicks off today and runs thru Sunday! Ana Fabrega, Ophira Eisenberg, Jo Firestone, Karen Chee and more will perform, and tickets start at just $6!

  • You should also most definitely head to Littlefield for Freaky Flame! It’s a queer comedy show raising money for LGBTQ immigrant rights organization Immigration Equality, and will feature hosts Sam Campbell, Simone Leitner, and Pete Valenti w/ guests Ana Fabrega, Sydnee Washington, Jay Jurden, Sophie Santos and Eva Victor // tickets are $8-$10 each.
  • Plus we’ve got a new round o’ Whiplash happening at Union Hall! Tonight’s lineup includes David Cross, Dulce Sloan and more, and tickets will run you $8-$10 a pop.
  • AND you can catch Catherine Cohen’s show over at Joe’s Pub for $20!
  • More into food vibes? It’s allegedly sold out (albeit free), but Archestratus is hosting A Wild Book Party for Esther Choi’s Le Corbuffet, and like, I feel like you should just show up to try and gate crash? POTENTIALLY V. WORTH IT.

Saturday October 5

  • First things first! The NY Times Food Festival kicks off today (and runs through tomorrow) at multiple venues! (In terms of the Bryant Park programming, ticketed areas are sold out, but you should still swing by to take advantage of Smorgasburg, the Marketplace and more, which do NOT require a ticket!)
  • Meanwhile, it’s The Infatuation’s EEEEEATSCON 2019 out at Forest Hills Stadium! Tickets are $15-$30.
  • Speaking of festivals, Elsie Fest is happening in Central Park and will feature performances from Darren Criss, Anais Mitchell and more! Tickets to that one’ll run you $65-$95 each.
  • You can also always hole up in a dark movie theater for brunch! Nitehawk Prospect Park is showing The Witches of Eastwick, while Nitehawk Williamsburg’s got The Witches and Rosemary’s Baby on deck!
  • More into tunes? Ty Segall and Freedom Band will play a $28 gig at Brooklyn Steel tonight!

  • Just wanna cut a rug? There’s a new round of Party Like It’s 1999 at the Bell House, and it’s Madonna-themed! (As always, FREE!)
  • Or just head on over to C’mon Everybody for a new round of Yes Homo: A Queer Daytime Party that starts at 4pm! (Also free!)
  • (And to keep the queer vibes goin’, CLEARLY stick around for Yas Mama! It kicks off at 11pm, and will run you $10.)
  • SPEAKING of queer vibes, you should absolutely hit up the NY Queer Zine Fair at Brooklyn Public Library!
  • (Plus head to Bluestockings for the Fall Queer Comics Showcase!)
  • But very importantly, you should also just consider posting up at home to watch Phoebe Waller-Bridge on SNL! (AT THE VERY LEAST, DVR IT!)
