My Wifi is currently out, so I am writing this in a v. archaic Notepad-type situation on my laptop! Ordinarily that would be incredibly annoying, but much like the Steve Winwood song, now that fall has (apparently? maybe?) fell I am feelin’ BACK IN THE HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiIIiIiiiIGH LIFE. AGAIN. Nothing can ruin my non-sweaty mood! (I reserve the right to retract that statement at any point from here on out, PS.) BECAUSE of these seasonally-driven good times, I am even considering DOING STUFF this weekend! For example, there are two Sigrid shows that I feel p. hype on, not to mention Greta Thunberg climate change awareness vibes (our GIF theme), book festivals and SO MUCH MORE! But before we get into all ye olde details, let’s first talk about some GR8 C0NT3NT you might’ve missed on BYT this week if you were too busy thinking about KFC body-slamming the fried chicken sandwich wars:

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 19

  • In terms of tunes, my top top TOP pick for tonight is a $30 Sigrid gig at Webster Hall!
  • Plus we’ve got a $45 show from Tycho over at Central Park…
  • …plus yMusic and Emily King will be at the Bell House for $25!
  • (I also feel like I’m contractually obligated to mention that Mac DeMarco is at Brooklyn Steel, just not entirely sure why anyone would pay $50 to see that.)
  • Broke dot com? Just head to Elsewhere for a $10 show from Harrison Lipton, Mons Vi and Pecas!
  • OR hit up Halcyon The Shop for a FREE Ellen Allien gig!

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 20

  • I’d also highly recommend grabbing $25 tickets to see Chrome Sparks and Ela Minus at Industry City!
  • Should you happen to have $50 to spare, you can catch Bloc Party and Cults over at Central Park!
  • For slightly less wallet-destroying vibes, you can hit up Dude York’s $12 Mercury Lounge gig instead!
  • More into movies? Easy Rider is being live-scored at Radio City tonight! Tickets are $20 each.
  • Or if you’re just tryna do queer things, then head to C’mon Everybody for Select All: Queer Mixer! FREE ENTRY! Starts at 7pm.
  • (It’s also the five year anniversary of Everybody, Everybody, so if you’ve got an extra $5 then stick around for that // kicks off at 11pm!)

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21

  • If there were ever a time to trek it out to Asbury Park, TODAY IS THE DAY! Sea.Hear.Now Festival is happening, and everybody from Rainbow Kitten Surprise to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts to Sharon Van Etten to Cat Power will be performing!
  • But maybe you really love Lana Del Rey (even though she is incapable of handling musical criticism), in which case I’ll redirect you to her $70+ gig at Jones Beach!
  • For slightly more local vibes, you can catch Lee Scratch Perry at Industry City for $25-$32!
  • Meanwhile, we’ve got POND and The Muckers at Warsaw for $22!
  • Or if you’re shootin’ for the high brow stars, get to Lincoln Center for an evening of talk and music avec Nick Cave! Tickets are $50.
  • I’m also vibing v. hard with Printed Matter Art Book Fair vibes at MoMA PS1! Hit that up, and enjoy bonus performances from Luke Stewart, Miriam Parker, Ami Dang and Andrew Bernstein!
  • Honorable mention: Lizzo at Bustle’s Rule Breakers Festival in Prospect Park, even though it is currently sold out. (See if someone is selling back their ticket!)
  • Just want a good old fashioned queer dance party? Head to Littlefield for the latest edition of Be Cute! Tickets are $10.

  • Or if that one is past your bedtime, focus on getting to C’mon Everybody for a new round of Yes Homo, which kicks off at 4pm! (FREE!)
  • Plus Club Cumming will host another Romy and Michele tea dance from 3pm to 8pm! No cover!
  • (And be sure to stick around for this month’s edition of A+ The Pan-Asian Drag Revue! Tickets are $10.)
  • In terms of comedy, you should PROBABLY head on over to Union Hall for a new round of Pop Show w/ Ziwe Fumudoh! Lineup includes Ana Fabrega, Lorelei Ramirez, Amy Zimmer and more, and tickets will run you just $8-$10 each.
  • (Plus stick around for We Love You: A Fucking Positive Comedy Show ft. Aparna Nancherla, Steve Jeanty and more! Tickets to that one are $8.)
  • More into movies? Head to Syndicated for a $7 screening of Kill Bill Vol. 1! (I know Tarantino is semi-canceled, but I will always stan Beatrix Kiddo!)
  • Or if you’d prefer to BEGIN on a movies note, then head to Nitehawk Williamsburg for a brunch screening of The Virgin Suicides!

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22

  • FIRST THINGS FIRST! The Social Good Summit (ft. Greta Thunberg) is happening at 92Y today from 9:30am to 5pm, and while GA tickets ($100) are sold out, if you’re a student, you can still grab admission for $35.
  • Plus head to Brooklyn Borough Hall for the official Brooklyn Book Festival Literary Marketplace, duh! 10am to 6pm.
  • Over in tunes land, Sea.Hear.Now Festival continues at Asbury Park! Today we’ve got Dave Matthews Band, B-52s, Dispatch, Dropkick Murphys and more! (I’d be lying if I said I thought today’s lineup was better than yesterday’s, but still need to mention!)

  • Back over in these parts, you can catch The Weeks at Bowery Ballroom for $15…
  • …or hit up Brooklyn Bowl for a $20 Black Moth Super Rainbow show!
  • But maybe Cat Power is more your speed, in which case head to Webster Hall for a $52.50 gig!
  • If you’re more into Diplo vibes, hit up Avant Gardner for Mad Decent’s Higher Ground! Tickets are $40+.
  • And honorable mention again will go to Lizzo, whose show is again sold out, although this time it’s at Radio City! (Always worth trying to get tickets on resale!)
  • But if you’re more of a movies kinda guy, you can take advantage of more Tarantino fever at Syndicated, where Inglourious Basterds is screening for $7 tonight!
  • (Or just head over there to watch the goddamn Emmys, YOU DO YOU!)
