Who’s amped for #SPORTS #SPORTS #SPORTS this weekend?! Yes, it’s America’s favorite pastime – watching large men crash into each other on a field, all while overeating from the comfort of a La-Z-Boy! ICYMI, the teams who made it to the Super Bowl this year are the Minneapolis Thunderbolts and the Los Angeles Dippin’ Dots. (I think LA stands a good chance!) But let’s all be real – we’re only going to those parties for one reason, and that is a free pass to extend day drinking into night drinking on a Sunday night! I know I’m on board! (ALSO – non-sarcastic pro-tip: if you’re headed to a party, go to Whole Foods for the snacks // $1.50 bags of Kettle chips, plus their pre-made chicken wings are always only like $4-$8 a bucket.) There is plenty to do leading up to ye olde game day, though (INCLUDING a Judy Blume tribute, a Bowie and Prince mashup dance party, a Spice World screening – our GIF theme – and MORE), and we’re about to talk about all of it RIGHT NOW! But first, here’s some stuff you might’ve missed on BYT this week:

  • Tunes-wise, holy bananas! Jane Birkin will be with the Wordless Music Orchestra at Carnegie Hall for $55+!
  • Although I would also HIGHLY recommend catching Big Ups and Sharkmuffin at Silent Barn for $10!
  • Not into that? Emancipator Ensemble will be at Brooklyn Steel for $30!
  • Broke as hell? Get to BRIC for a new B-Side ft. Ang Low! (Free!)

  • And Posture is hosting a queer dance party at Nowadays w/ Lauren Flax and JD Samson! (Also free!)
  • For comedy vibes, catch Josie Long at the Bell House with Jonny Donahoe, John Hodgman, Maeve Higgins and other special guests! Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
  • Plus you can head to Union Hall for a new round of Serious Matters w/ Kevin McCaffrey, Brock Mahan and more! Tickets are just $7 each.
  • Just wanna watch Drag Race? Lot 45 is hosting one with drag shows after the screening, and cover is $5.
  • OR you can just head to Brooklyn Bazaar to watch for free!

  • It’s Groundhog Day, so if you feel any emotional connection to this holiday (or the movie), head to Videology for Ten Bones Theatre Company’s presentation of Groundhog Day entirely from memory! Tickets are $10.
  • But if we’re doing movie vibes, obviously head to Syndicated for a $4 midnight screening of Spice World, DUH!
  • More into burlesque? Head to the latest Wasabassco extravaganza at Littlefield, titled “The Naked Detective“! Tickets are $15-$30 a pop.
  • My top pick for tunes tonight is Yoke Lore at Park Church Co-op! Tickets are $12 a pop.
  • You should also get over to Baby’s All Right to celebrate NYC’s hardest working bands of 2017 w/ Oh My Rockness! Big Bliss, Fruit & Flowers and more will be there, so grab a $10-$12!
  • Meanwhile, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are at Brooklyn Steel for $30…

  • For starters, Symphony Space is paying tribute to Judy Blume’s 80th birthday with Judy Blumesday! Lineup is INCREDIBLY GOOD and features Judy Blume (duh), Samantha Bee, Molly Ringwald, Julie Klausner, Chloe Sevigny and more! (Tickets are $26+!)
  • If that’s not your jam, Saint Vitus is hosting a Valentine’s Day flea market for all your pre-holiday shopping needs! (I have none!)
  • If you weren’t lucky enough to be invited to a boozy house party to watch the Super Bowl, Syndicated is hosting one – $10 gets you bar admission, $15 gets you theater admission, $52 gets you four hours of open bar (beer, wine, well), and $325 gets you a booth for up to five people with open bar.
  • The Well is also hosting a party, and beers are two-for-one all night, plus you get free wings ‘n nachos with each beer! (Or you can just buy them for a $1 if you’re not drinking.)

  • Film-wise, Videology is hosting a $20 screening of Airplane! ft. bonus airplane bottles o’ booze included in the price of your ticket!
  • (You should also stick around for a $12 screening of The Breakfast Club after that, ’cause who doesn’t enjoy some 80s teenage angst?)
  • Meanwhile, Nitehawk is hosting brunch screenings of True Romance and In the Fade!
  • Or if you’re one of those people who still clings to Disney fandom as an adult for some reason, head to the Bell House for a Little Mermaid party! Tickets are $12-$15 a pop.
