NYC Best Weekend Bets

Hello I am very over this week! But I still like the Olympics, and how I can fall asleep on my couch and wake up at 4am and they’re figure skating away! I also like that it’s Chinese New Year (allegedly will be a good year for Dragons like me), and that there’s a ton of good stuff happening this weekend, like a midnight screening of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (clearly our GIF theme, esp. since Janeane Garofalo is performing at a separate event this weekend, too), a roller derby party and more!

Before we launch into all of the below, though, let’s talk quickly about what you might’ve missed on BYT this week:

  • First of all, couples can take a Sex Magic 101 course at Catland for $20. I feel like this deserves mentioning.
  • Meanwhile, you can watch RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars at The Well and/or at Lot 45 and/or at Brooklyn Bazaar!
  • Tunes-wise, catch Eleanor Friedberger at City Vineyard for $20!
  • You can also see ZZ Ward at Irving Plaza for about $30…

  • …or scope the inimitable Laurie Anderson at Town Hall for $50+!
  • For comedy vibes, my top pick is The Wards of Merkin at Littlefield ft. Janeane Garofalo, Dave Hill and more! Tickets are $10.
  • Or get to Union Hall for an evening with Greg Barris! Tickets will run you just $10 each.
  • PLUS it’s a new Jean (Grae) and John (Hodgman) at the Bell House tonight, and tickets to that are $15 a pop.

  • First, bunk off work and celebrate Chinese New Year! Action starts at noon in Chinatown, and I will most definitely be boppin’ around.
  • Plus IndieCade East 2018 kicks off at Moving Image today! Grab a day pass for $45, or purchase a full festival pass for $125.
  • If it’s music you’re after, see Philip Glass Ensemble play Carnegie Hall! Limited tickets left, so jump on that now if you’ve got ye olde finances for it.
  • Meanwhile, Neon Indian’s doing a $15 DJ set at Good Room…

  • First, catch a brunch screening of Wonder Woman at Nitehawk, DUH!
  • Later, you can party it up with some roller derby girls at Littlefield! Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door.
  • For music, hit up Music Hall of Williamsburg for a $15 Now, Now show!
  • If you’re looking to cut a rug, head to Soul Clap w/ La Luz, The Mystery Lights, Bodega and Jane Church at Elsewhere! Tickets are $20.

  • Broke as hell? Just d-d-d-d-dance over at the Bell House by way of Tainted Love, America’s favorite free 80s dance party!
  • Plus it’s a new round of Picture This at Union Hall ft. Dave Hill and tons more! Grab tickets for $8-$10 each.
  • (Also probably stick around for Oh, Such A Good Show, Oh! with Phoebe Robinson and more for another $8-$10!)

  • For tuneage, head to Alphaville for an $8 show from Prettiest Eyes, Surfbort and Lola Pistola!
  • You can also head to Rough Trade for a free Bunny Michael set in the afternoon…
  • …or just swing by for VNNY at 8pm! Tickets are $15-$30.
  • BUT if you’d prefer to lie on the floor surrounded by pillows and blankets listening to music from 6-11pm, obviously get to Nowadays for Planetarium! Tickets are $20.
