Wow, 2018 is nearly here! In addition to this having been an awful goddamn year, I am looking forward to 2018 for many reasons, like the Olympics and the World Cup and my thirtieth birthday! I am not, however, looking forward to NYE, because it is a dumb, high-pressure holiday! That’s why I’ve adopted the tradition of sitting in my house watching Melancholia and eating my weight in sushi! Hence our GIF theme (which, TBH, feels appropriate on many levels given the current state of the planet) will be Kirsten Dunst staring down the barrel of the apocalypse! HERE WE GO!

  • My top pick for tonight is a FREE Mal Blum and the Blums show at Baby’s All Right.
  • Or head to Elsewhere for a $10-$12 Uni show!
  • Plus Beacon will be at Public Arts for $20!
  • You can also catch Gogol Bordello at Brooklyn Steel! Tickets are $32 a pop.
  • If Dar Williams is more your speed, head to the Bell House for a $25-$30 gig!

  • First, Elsewhere is hosting two gigs tonight – the first is Twisty Cats ($10), and the second is a $15-$20 dance party w/ Matthias Meyer!
  • Plus it’s night TWO of Gogol Bordello at Brooklyn Steel! Tickets are still $32 each.
  • Meanwhile, Lettuce will be at Brooklyn Bowl for $30-$35 tonight…
  • …and DJ Twinbeatz will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg for $35!

  • First up we’ve got Diarrhea Planet at Rough Trade for $20!
  • You can also d-d-d-d-dance it up w/ Flosstradamus for $35 at Brooklyn Steel!
  • But maybe the holidays have left you broke AF, in which case just get to the Bell House for Tainted Love – a free eighties dance party…
  • …or swing by Black Flamingo for a free Photay DJ set!

  • Or if you’d rather skip the tunes entirely, just get to Union Hall for Yardsale Comedy – a benefit for the Children’s Health Fund – ft. Mitra Jouhari, Mary Houlihan and more! Tickets are just $6-$8.
  • And for film vibes, get to Videology for a $23 screening of Eyes Wide Shut ft. bonus glass of champagne, plus it’s another round of a $12 Scott Pilgrim vs. the World drinking game at midnight!
  • Plus you can swing by Nitehawk bright ‘n early for brunch screenings of Hook and When Harry Met Sally!
  • OR head to Moving Image for screenings of Personal Shopper and A Ghost Story!

  • For starters, Videology’s hosting $20 classic movie screenings ft. champagne toasts all day long – there’s Some Like It Hot, All About Eve and Casablanca, all leading up to a FREE classic Hollywood NYE party!
  • If you want to spend your last hours of 2018 with live tunes, Cardi B’s at Knockdown Center for $75+!
  • Plus you can spend your evening w/ Real Estate and Whitney at Brooklyn Steel! Tickets are a very appropriate $20.18 in advance, or $25 day of show.
  • Or if you missed Diarrhea Planet at Rough Trade, you can catch ’em again at Rough Trade for $25!
  • You can also ring in 2018 with Lettuce over at Brooklyn Bowl! Tickets are $55-$60.
  • More into They Might Be Giants? Head to Music Hall of Williamsburg for a $40 show!
  • Or just catch Beach Fossils at Baby’s All Right for $40-$45!
  • If Amanda Palmer is more your jam, hang w/ her and Jason Webley at Brooklyn Bazaar for $65 instead!

  • Meanwhile, Rich Medina will be at C’mon Everybody for $35-$75…
  • …and Moon Boots will be at House of Yes for $30-$75!
  • Or if queer dance parties are more in your wheelhouse, Hot Rabbit is having one for $15-$30 tonight!
  • Of course, there’s always a $20-$25 tribute to Morrissey and The Smiths at Littlefield…
  • …and there’s a Purple Rain dance party at Syndicated! Tickets are $25 online or $30 at the door…
  • …or there’s a synthwave dance party at Saint Vitus for $18+!
  • Trying to save money for NYD brunch tomorrow? Go to the Awesome Aughts dance party at Union Hall – they’ll spin all the best music from the early 2000s for just $5!
  • Plus The Rookery is hosting a masquerade party ft. no cover AND a complimentary champagne toast at midnight…
  • …and Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club is also having a free flamingo formal tonight!

Bye, 2017!

  • If you’re not too hungover and/or busy getting ready for brunch, you can check out the annual Polar Bear Plunge at Coney Island this morning!
  • In terms of movies, you can watch When Harry Met Sally all evening long at Syndicated for just $4 a screening…
  • …or just get to Videology for an all-day Lord of the Rings marathon! (Free!)

Here’s to another shitshow of a year, y’all! #OPTIMISMLOL
