Just two more weekends to cram in ALL OF THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT before Christmas, so get ready to hit a variety of pop-up shops, shows, parties (ft. free booze), a screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol and MORE! But first, let’s talk about some of the rad things you may have missed on BYT this week:

  • Why not kick things off in Brooklyn, yeah? Russian Circles will take the stage at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Mutoid Man this evening, and you can snag yourself tickets at the reasonable price of twenty bones a pop.
  • AND over at Palisades we’ve got a solid lineup happening in the way of Pictureplane, Jamaican Queens, Giggly Boys and Jerry Paper; tickets to that will run you ten bucks a pop, and the action kicks off at 8pm.
  • Personally I’m going to try to steer you in the direction of the Studio at Webster Hall, where SAY YAS is happening with performances from Catey Shaw, AYER, Brayton Bowman and others for ten bucks per ticket.
  • But if you’re like me, chances are you’re BROKE AS FUCK; not to worry, ’cause Panache will be throwing a holiday showcase over at Baby’s All Right w/ DJ Jonathan Toubin and others for all of zero dollars this evening.

  • You can also catch ANOTHER F-R-E-E show at Baby’s All Right starting at 11:59pm (use the cash saved on show tickets to buy ALL OF THE COFFEE AND/OR DRUGS) ft. the inimitable Landmarks! Highly recommend.
  • Or spend a very reasonable $5-$8 to get invited to the non-office holiday party of your dreams over at Littlefield! There will be live band karaoke, mistletoe, sexy Santa, cheap drinks, and all sorts of other great I-am-about-to-make-bad-choices things!
  • Of course, if you don’t mind heading into Midtown Manhattan for your holiday party times, then WorkHouse has a VERY worthwhile one featuring free cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from 5pm until 7pm. RSVP here.
  • You can ALSO snag some free booze and food over at the Young & Able pop-up from 6:30-9:30pm, just be sure to shoot an email over to [email protected] to let them know you want in ASAP!

  • Even MORE holiday cheer this week as the Aimee Mann Christmas Show returns at The Space at Westbury! Ted Leo is just one of many special guests, and tickets will cost you between thirty and forty-five bucks.
  • Of course, if that’s too far afield for you on a Friday night, and/or you just wanna d-d-d-d-dance, you should perhaps refocus your plans and hit up Brooklyn Bowl for an Animal Collective DJ set! Tickets are fifteen bucks a pop.
  • SIMILARLY, there will be ample opportunities to bust a move down the street at Glasslands, where Penguin Prison AND Air Zaire will be doing DJ sets this evening ALSO for fifteen bucks per ticket.
  • Want even MORE Glasslands crammed into your Friday night, though? Get there for the early gig, which features Bear Hands as the opener alongside Tony Castles and Dreamers. Again, tickets are fifteen bones each.
  • And if none of that is ringing your bell, probably prepare to brave the commute over to Terminal 5, where you’ll be able to catch a gig from Flosstradamus w/ GTA and others for thirty bucks in advance, thirty-five day of show.
  • Personally I think we should just hit up Living Room, where we can catch a budget-friendly gig (read: ten bucks a ticket) from Twintapes, PROM, Paperwhite AND Teen Commandments, all of which happen to be favorites of ours.

  • But maybe you just want to take the music into your own hands / vocals this weekend, in which case you should most definitely hit up Union Hall for The Xmas Pop Singalong, aka exactly what it sounds like, for ten dollars a ticket.
  • If singing along is not your jam, however, you MIGHT be more inclined to SWEAR along over at Videology; they’ll be hosting a screening of Die Hard (complete with aforementioned #SWEARALONG) for FREE!
  • What’s that? You inexplicably do not care for Die Hard? WELL, you can always swing on by MoMA for a screening of Gosford Park instead! Remember that movie? Yeah? A little bit? Well, be sure to bunk off work early, ’cause it’s showing at 4pm.
  • If we’re going to go the cinematic route, however, I am going to HAVE TO IMPLORE YOU to quickly grab a $35 ticket to 92Y this evening for an evening with TIM BURTON (!!!) and AMY ADAMS and CHRISTOPH WALTZ! They’ll be there to discuss Big Eyes, and it will be incredible.
  • But if that’s just too far uptown for your taste, then perhaps just get set up at Le Poisson Rouge for the holiday edition of Yum’s the Word! It’ll be a good old fashioned melding of birthday parties with storytelling (and ice cream cake) for fifteen bucks in advance, twenty day of show.
  • But because I know you are super broke, let’s skip all that other stuff and get our free drink on instead with Eclectic Haus, where five dollars will get us free drinks and snacks AND an evening of fine art, live body painting and more.

  • First, let’s just talk about how (if we can get ourselves out to The Space at Westbury) we’ll be able to spend a magical evening with John Waters for A John Waters Christmas, tickets to which will run us $35-$100 a pop.
  • And you can catch Parlour Tricks with Rocket & The Ghost and The Hollows over at Mercury Lounge for a nice little early gig; tickets will only run you ten bucks if you grab them in advance, otherwise they’ll be upped to twelve a piece.
  • Or if you’re more into the holiday spirit // Aimee Mann, then be sure to get yourself over to Town Hall for another round of The Return of The Aimee Mann Christmas Show, ft. everyone from Fred Armisen to Susanna Hoffs for between thirty-five and forty-five bucks a ticket.
  • Meanwhile, we’ve got a second Flosstradamus show happening over at Terminal 5; GTA and others will open things up again, and tickets will still run you thirty bucks in advance // thirty-five day of show.
  • Too pricey? If you don’t mind hitting up a late show over at Bowery Ballroom (11:30pm start time), there is a miraculously non-sold out edition of Gary Gulman live tonight (the early one = forget about it) for just twenty bucks.
  • We also love Hank & Cupcakes pretty super hard, so you might also consider heading on over to Rough Trade to catch them alongside Mother Feather, Crushed Out and Planet Rump (DJ Set) for twelve bucks in advance, fourteen day of show.

  • AND there’s a solid setup at Baby’s All Right this evening ft. Fat White Family, Surfbort and EZTV, so if you can scrounge up eight bucks in advance // ten day of show, this has your name written ALL OVER IT.
  • I’m personally pretty into Computer Magic playing a gig with The Prettiots, Mainland and Keith Sweaty (DJ set) over at Glasslands; tickets to that guy will run you just ten dollars, so get ready for some serious sonic value.
  • And around the corner we’ve also got Great Good Fine Ok playing a show with VERITE, so if you don’t mind the fact that doors are at 11:30pm and the show starts at 11:59pm, then scrounge up ten bucks and HAVE THE BEST TIME!
  • Or maybe you’d prefer to focus on your Christmas shopping (and/or boozing), in which case you should definitely swing by Fort Grey either today or tomorrow; they’ll be showing off their unique selection of gifts, PLUS there will be Ginger Spice Toddy’s and Grapefruit Hibiscus Spritzers flowing for (we THINK) FREE!
  • And while we’re on the subject of free booze, you can also register for free tickets to 101 Bedford Avenue today (AND tomorrow) for a Diesel pop-up shop that’ll feature free hot cocoa, cocktails and live music. Not a bad deal!

  • Shake off your hangover courtesy of Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant bright and early (read: 11am sharp) over at the Film Forum, where they’ll be putting on a screening of Bringing Up Baby as part of their Film Forum Jr. series!
  • Or if THAT ain’t your jam, slash you don’t feel capable of rolling out of bed quite so soon, there is ALSO a screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol happening over at BAM at 2pm, perhaps a bit more conducive to sleeping in.
  • And while we’re on the subject of the Muppets, we’ve also got a special edition of Muppet Vault happening at Union Hall this evening featuring ALL OF THE CHRISTMAS THEMED FOOTAGE! Tickets are eight bucks.
  • Speaking of Brooklyn times, you can also cruise on over to Littlefield for the first Official Unofficial Queer Exchange Fair from 11am-6pm ft. holiday gift shopping, tarot card readings, haircuts, music and MORE. Entry is free.
  • OR, trying to music-up your brunch? Head to Baby’s All Right for a Gigawatts-presented holiday party featuring Sunflower Bean, Honduras, The Due Diligence, Happy Lives, Granny and MORE for just five bucks a ticket.

  • And SPEAKING of holiday parties, the Bell House will be hosting the Hatch Bash from 1pm until 4pm this afternoon; tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, and will feature food, drinks, crafty work stations, photobooths and MORE!
  • Plus there’s a super solid lineup happening at Mercury Lounge this evening ft. Heaters, The Mystery Lights and Savants! Tickets are just eight bucks (UNHEARD OF, PRACTICALLY!) in advance, and then they’ll rise to a still very reasonable ten bucks day of show.
  • SPEAKING of things that will run you ten bucks, there’s another round of Night Soil happening at Baby’s All Right tonight ft. Bunny Michael, Melanie Bonajo AND our new favorite band of all time Bottoms!
  • PLUS it’s Nick Lowe’s Quality Holiday Revue just up the street at Bowery Ballroom; he’ll be joined by Los Straitjackets, and so if you happen to have thirty-five bucks handy after all the drunk pizza you ordered this weekend, this MIGHT BE FOR YOU!
  • But whoa whoa whoa maybe you’re super poor and that last thing is NOT AN OPTION? If that’s the case, just head to Glasslands for a show from Crocodiles, Cassie Ramone and others for ten bucks in advance, twelve day of show.
