Well hey! Here we are at another weekend! And not just ANY weekend…COMIC CON WEEKEND! That’s where I’m headed the next couple of days, so stay tuned for what I assume will be a real weird recap situation next week. Plus it’s Mondo Fest this weekend if you’re looking to fill that CMJ-shaped hole in your heart, and it’s New Yorker Fest, too. (SO MANY FESTS.) Our GIF theme of choice will be Beetlejuice, mostly because I love Winona Ryder so much, but also because it’s screening at Syndicated very affordably on Saturday.

Also, I don’t believe in Columbus Day, so if you’re looking for long weekend recommendations, this is not the place! You will need to check back on Monday morning for the Hit List, because we will be going about business as usual over here!

Before we get into all of your options, here’s what you might’ve missed on BYT this week:

  • More into The Babe Rainbow? Catch ’em at Baby’s All Right for $14!
  • AND Kaki King’s at Littlefield for $15!
  • Movie-wise, you can go watch the 1931 version of Frankenstein (which always makes me feel real sad) at Syndicated for just $4!
  • Plus in honor of NYCC, Shipwreck (the competitive literary erotic fan fiction people) will be taking on Jurassic Park for $20-$45 at the Bell House!

  • For starters, Carly Rae Jepsen will participate in a talk at New Yorker Festival AND perform live for $49+.
  • (And in non-musical New Yorker Festival programming, there’s a lot happening, but Sofia Coppola’s talk is my top pick. Tickets are $59+.)
  • And Aquilo and Yoke Lore will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg for $18-$20!
  • Plus Surf Rock Is Dead have an EP release show at Rough Trade for $10-$30…
  • Mirah’s at Park Church Co-Op for $14…
  • …AND Magic City Hippies will be at Mercury Lounge for $12-$15.
  • More into WAND? Head to Bowery Ballroom for a $15 show!
  • Meanwhile, TroyBoi’s at Brooklyn Steel for $20-$25…

  • …and TWO solid shows are happening at Baby’s All Right – 1. LVL UP will play a $13-$15 set, and 2. The Golden Filter go on second for $12-$15!
  • Rich AF? Grab a $60+ticket to see The National and Daughter at Forest Hills Stadium!
  • Just wanna d-d-d-d-dance? Hit up House of Yes for a $15+ Le Youth set!
  • OR you can always head to Town Hall for a $32+ Sun Kil Moon show.
  • For movie vibes, hit up Syndicated for $4 screenings of Scream and a $10 midnight screening of Suspiria!
  • Also, hold the goddamn phone, ’cause Tommy Wiseau will be in person at Sunshine Cinema for screenings of The Room! Tickets are $20 each.
  • Meanwhile, as part of NYCC, there’ll be a live stage reading of Plan 9 From Outer Space at Littlefield ft. Gilbert Gottfried, John Hodgman and more! Tickets are $20 a pop.

  • For starters, head to Littlefield for a new round of Tinder Live w/ Lane Moore! Tickets are $15 each.
  • You should also most definitely hit up the 2017 Lit Crawl // details here.
  • Tunes-wise, my first vote goes to a $12 Colleen Green show at Trans-Pecos!
  • Although, you can also kick things off at Music Hall of Williamsburg, where Hundred Waters are set to play a $16-$18 show!
  • Plus Frankie Cosmos will be at Murmrr Theatre for $18-$20…
  • …and Vetiver will be at Park Church Co-Op for $20!
  • Speaking of $20, Deerhoof are at Villain tonight for exactly that much, too!
  • Meanwhile, Craig David’s at Terminal 5 for $25…
  • …and Yheti will be at Rough Trade for $15-$20!

  • Or if you missed LVL UP at Baby’s All Right last night, you can catch ’em again tonight for another $13-$15.
  • More into a Smiths and Morrissey dance party? Head to Saint Vitus! Tickets are $8, or free with a Smiths/Morrissey T-shirt or tattoo.
  • Got $49+? Blood Orange will be doing a talk and performing solo as part of New Yorker Festival!
  • (And so will Laura Marling! Tickets are also $49+.)
  • (AND so will Kumail Nanjiani, and a whole lot of others, but Kumail is my top non-tunes pick for $59+.)
  • More into movies? Just head to Syndicated for $4 screenings of Beetlejuice and another $10 midnight screening of Suspiria!
  • Meanwhile, Tommy Wiseau is going to be posted up at Sunshine Cinema again for $20 screenings of The Room
  • …and Videology is putting on $22 screenings of The Fly ft. a bonus “mystery drink” with each ticket…
  • …AND Brooklyn Museum is doing a free, immersive screening of The Holy Mountain if you’re feelin’ Jodorowsky vibes.
  • If comedy is more your scene, hit up Union Hall for two sessions of comedy to benefit Puerto Rico – the first is with Jo Firestone, Sasheer Zamata and more, and the second is with Aparna Nancherla, Ricky Velez and more. Both are $10-$15 // DO IT!

  • And New Yorker Festival’s programming continues to be mega-stacked, but Chelsea Manning’s talk is my top pick at $39+.
  • Plus you can catch the final day of Tommy Wiseau in the flesh at Sunshine Cinema for $20 screenings of The Room!
  • (Or get going early on those movie times w/ an 11am screening of Paper Moon at the Film Forum!)
