Once upon a time, I had a radio show that only played bands currently performing in the District. That show is super dead, so we’ve resurrected it (with way more words and far less radio) in the form of this column. Every day I’ll review a song from a band playing in D.C. that night. The rules are, 1. I can only listen to the song once and 2. I only have until the end of the song to finish my review.

Okay so this New To Me comes with a bit of a ~mystery~. Like always, I picked Wave Racer because of the band name, because when you’re purposefully picking artists you’ve never heard before the only things you really can go on are name, venue, and the other bands playing with them. So I saw that name Wave Racer and I thought to myself, “That sounds like it could be a fun arcade game!” So I googled the artist and low and behold, the link to this video was purple. I threw me the fuck off because I’m 100% sure I’ve never heard this song before. So then I furiously looked through the New to Me archives to make sure I hadn’t reviewed this song already and I don’t think I have, but if I missed it SORRY. Anyway, the reason I decided to review this song and didn’t just pick another band after the initial confusion is because IT IS AMAZING. This song is what happiness feels like. It is cotton candy and roller coasters and true love and laughing until you feel like you are going to die and pure euphoria. I want to listen to this song every day for the rest of my life. Thank you and goodnight.

You can see Wave Racer tonight at U Street Music Hall.

Alright, I’m kind of feeling this. Very femme fatale in a more modern way. Oh my god. That chain mail dress skirt thing the lead singer is wearing is AMAZING. Where can I get that shit? I need it for my Renn Fest costume (seriously, hit me up). The chorus is very ehh… But this is a fine song overall. I had higher hopes for it but whatever. It’s all fine. I have to say though, the aesthetics in this music video are awesome. I’m all about those half masks.

You can see Black Alley on Saturday at Rock and Roll Hotel.

I definitely don’t know what’s happening at the beginning of this song but I’m excited to see where it goes. Ah good old fashioned bluegrass. These guys are really taking it all the way with their silly get ups, but I can get behind it. If you like bluegrass you will probably like this song. If you hate bluegrass you will probably hate this song. That’s just how it is. Oh hell yeah. They busted out the harmonica. That’s what I’m talking about.

You can see The Plank Stompers on Sunday at Bossa Bistro.
