Once upon a time, I had a radio show that only played bands currently performing in the District. That show is super dead, so we’ve resurrected it (with way more words and far less radio) in the form of this column. Every day I’ll review a song from a band playing in D.C. that night. The rules are, 1. I can only listen to the song once and 2. I only have until the end of the song to finish my review.

FRIDAY

THE BLACK MADONNA – STAY

First off, The Black Madonna is an excellent band name. Second, what the fuck is this? It is so damn boring. So boring. This is just a very minimalistic beat. Okay, it’s getting slightly better. I bet so much money that the very last 30 seconds of this song is going to be awesome. I just don’t have the patience for this kind of stuff, although it would be great dressing room music. I can totally see myself trying on clothes with this playing in the background. I’m very lame.

You can see The Black Madonna tonight at U Street Music Hall.

SATURDAY

SUMAC – THORN IN THE LION’S PAW

I love Sumac. The food. Or the seasoning, I guess. Damn now I really want kabob. This does not sound like the kind of music they play at kabob joints. I honestly did not expect this at all. I’m reading the YouTube comments and I guess this is a super group? I don’t know any of these people. I guess it would be very amusing if Food Corner Kabob House jammed out to this all day. The creepy piano opening is cool. I’m not a big fan of metal, but this is isn’t too bad. I could 100% do without the horrible growly vocals. It sounds like a worse version of Christian Bale’s Batman.

You can see Sumac on Saturday at Rock and Roll Hotel.

SUNDAY

NE-HI – SINCE I’VE BEEN THINKING

This is okay so far. This is very catchy and summery. Almost kind of lazy sounding. This is good napping in the sun music, which is one of my favorite activities and why I have so many bug bites on my limbs. Now that I think about it, this sounds like Shark Week. If you like Shark Week you will probably like this.

You can see Ne-Hi on Sunday at DC9.
