I had a radio show that only played bands performing in the District. That show is super dead, so we’ve resurrected it (with way more words and far less radio) in the form of this column. Every day I’ll review a song from a band playing in D.C. that night. The rules are, 1. I can only listen to the song once and 2. I only have until the end of the song to finish my review.
JOYWAVE – BAD DREAM
So at first I definitely wasn’t sold on this, but I am a huge fan of grandiose choirs so this chorus is actually killing it for me. Not to mention Mick Jenkins and Little Simz have some pretty great versus. The insane chorus is making me really like the minimal beat during the verses, because I think if the entire song was soaring strings and religious choirs than it might becoming a little too much too quickly (although I would probably still be into it because I love that shit). This is just so moody and good. I can’t imagine anything more perfect for the dark basement that is U Street Music Hall.
