I had a radio show that only played bands performing in the District. That show is super dead, so we’ve resurrected it (with way more words and far less radio) in the form of this column. Every day I’ll review a song from a band playing in D.C. that night. The rules are, 1. I can only listen to the song once and 2. I only have until the end of the song to finish my review.
JONATHAN TERRELL – HOUSTON BLUES
I am 100% reviewing this song because I read on Jonathan Terrell’s website that his parents were both ex-cult members and that fascinates me. So this dude has a very different aesthetic than most other country musicians. This music video looks like it could be a surf punk video, like I would not be surprised if this was left over footage from a Shark Week video. Yet, he has a pretty traditional country song. It’s perhaps not as twangy as most country music, but this is nowhere near pop country or anything like that. I like it. It’s real sad and I can totally imagine myself drinking while listening to this song. Those are basically the only two qualifications for a good country song. At least in my eyes.
