I had a radio show that only played bands performing in the District. That show is super dead, so we’ve resurrected it (with way more words and far less radio) in the form of this column. Every day I’ll review a song from a band playing in D.C. that night. The rules are, 1. I can only listen to the song once and 2. I only have until the end of the song to finish my review.
ARKELLS – COME TO LIGHT
So nothing about this is great, but it is fun. It’s poppy and happy and probably well suited for a Friday morning before a long weekend. I am tired and sleepy, so it’s maybe a little too high energy for me but whatever. It’s fine and unoffensive and a good time. You’ll have a good time.
FUTUREBIRDS – VIRGINIA SLIMS
Okay. It’s a little moody but in a sun drenched summery kind of way. This is very fitting for the dumb warm weather that’s currently going on. Yeah, this is cute and fun. The music video is adorable. There are a lot of little kids and then people suddenly dancing among piles of hay. I’m not sad I’m listening to this at all.
DRINKS – HERMITS ON HOLIDAY
This is already so fucking weird and I love it. Okay… Maybe this is less weird than I thought. Maybe it’s just the music video that’s weird? Nope. The lyrics are weird too. I’m definitely getting a St Vincent vibe and that is most definitely not a bad thing. I mean it’s not as amazing as St Vincent but still. I’m pretty happy with it.
